REX
By Jerry McLaurin
Rex, as most any Latin
scholar will tell, is Latin for
king, which makes a most
appropriate name for Rex
the myna bird that reigns
over the domain of Goff’s
Gifts, owned and operated on
the square by Roy and
Imogene Goff.
How Rex came to live at
Goff’s Gifts is a very long and
complicated story, too long to
be incorporated here; let it
suffice to be said that
Imogene longed for a myna
bird over a great length of
time. Finally, a light fixture
salesman who installed the
lights for the Goffs, took pity
upon her and gave her one of
the Southeast Asian beauties
ten years ago.
At the time Imogene was
working with Roy at the drug
store; the gift shop had not
yet been opened, so Rex lived
at City Pharmacy. Once
while Imogene and Roy were
out of town, Rex escaped
from his cage and flew
through the door to the street
outside. By the time that
anyone could react Rex had
vanished and panic set in. A
massive search began. Radio
bulletins alerted all listeners
and the residents of Jackson
were on the lookout for a
black bird that had a fetish
for making wolf calls.
Meanwhile, John King,
who lived on S. Oak Street
spotted a familiar looking
feathered critter perched on
the branch of a tree in his
backyard. After a close
examination he was certain
that it was Rex. John fetched
a plate of food to use as bait
and placed it in the yard. Rex
never has been a bird to
refuse a handout and couldn’t
resist this one. John got a
hand on him and soon Rex
was back in his cage at the
drug store where Imogene
and Roy found him after they
returned from their trip.
When a bird’s diet comes to
mind, most people think of
berries and bugs and for
some larger birds, wild
game, but one would seldom
consider dogfood as a part of
their diet. Rex is singularly
partial to dogfood and in
particular Jim Dandy. Imo
gene has tried grapes and
ground beef but Rex prefers
Jim Dandy. In spite of this
strange preference Rex
hasn’t barked a single bark.
Most myna birds have the
ability to pick up words and
talk and Rex is no exception.
It takes only a little
imagination to figure what
might happen with a talking
bird in a place of business.
Imogene and Roy are both
embarrassed and amused on
occasion when Rex lets out
with a wolf call as a stranger
passes the front of the shop;
some folks stop but all of
them glare at the helpless
and innocent figure (Roy or
Imogene) sitting behind the
cash register at the front
of the store. Usually it’s
rather comical but when it’s
Roy behind the cash register
and a lady passing the front
of the store things can get
rather tense.
Rex catches many un
suspecting newcomers to the
shop with a low and husky,
“How ya doin.” On more
than one occasion, not seeing
Rex, they answer to Imogene
that they’re, “doin’ fine.”
Rex has a regular fan club
in Jackson. Kids can’t pass
the front of the store without
making their parents take
them in to speak to Rex. And
many adults list Rex on their
“friends to visit” list and
drop by to see him and chat
with him regularly.
All and all Imogene and
Rex get along well. Imo
gene’s only complaint is that
from time to time Rex gets
on a talking binge and won’t
shut up, then it’s hair pulling
time.
Asa rule, myna birds live
an average of 30 years. Rex
is a little over ten now which
means that Imogene and Rex
have at least 20 more years of
people surprising and hair
pulling to go and that Roy
had better learn to duck
behind the counter when a
female passes the front of the
shop.
