Pet overpopulation is fast
becoming a serious problem
in many communities. The
responsibility of caring for
these ever-increasing num
bers of animals rests, to a
large extent, on the shoulders
of the community’s humane
society. To give these
animals the best possible
care, veterinarians and com
munity humane organiza
tions are working closely
together. This cooperation
results in a system for
dealing with the total animal
population that is practical
and ethical, as well as
humane and medically
sound.
The humane movement in
the United States dates back
to the Civil War period when
there were no laws for the
protection of animals. At that
Barnesville To Have "Buggy Days"
Festival on September 21-27
Butts County’s neighbor to
the southwest Barnesville
is planning a gala
week-long festival during the
week of September 21-27.
The festival derives its
name from the fact that
Barnesville was once the
largest buggy works in the
South. In fact, Barnesville
was often referred to as the
“Cincinnati of the South”
because of its tremendous
buggy output. Barnesville
became synonymous with
buggies and horse drawn
carriages.
The Barnesville Buggy was
the outgrowth of the business
genius of Jackson G. Smith
and George Summers. Start
ing in 1886 with a buggy
repair shop, the business
eventually flourished into
two separate buggy works.
Both known for their
business acumen and phil
anthropic activities, the two
men had a great impact on
the eventual economic and
cultural development of

The week-long festival is

unwanted animals. In 1866,
Henry Bergh founded the
American Society for the

Today, there are approxi

veterinarian also provides
for the total needs of the
animal population. Since
most of the pets in a shelter
have an unknown or in
complete health history, the
humane society veterinarian
doesn’t know if and when
vaccinations were given. So
he sees that incoming
animals are carefully
examined for parasites,
bodily defects or signs of
infectious disease, and ino
culated to assure future
protection against the major
dog or cat diseases. All
adoptable dops under one
year of age are vaccinated
for canine distemper, and all
adoptable cats are vacci
nated for feline distemper.
In well-managed shelters,
pets are fed a balanced diet,
kept clean and comfortable
and isolated until examined.
The shelter tries to avoid an
“assembly line” approach to
handling the pets. This helps
both the lay and the medical
staff to recognize individual
cases of disease and min
imizes the opportunity for an
infected animal to leave the
shelter undetected.
These methods, now in use
by many humane shelters
across the nation, are
providing that infectious
disease can be controlled
effectively in the shelter.
Pets suitable for adiption
are quickly indentified and

isolated from animals not
ready for adoption. No sick
dog or cat finds its way to the
adoption ward. A healthy pet
that develops signs of disease
is promptly removed from
the adoption ward to assure
that the pet you bring home
from the shelter will be a
healthy one.
The humane society offers
many non-medical services,
too. It picks up and holds
roaming animals and inves
tigates cruelty complaints.
The adoption service, of
course, is the best known
service provided by humane
societies. Most people who go
to the shelters are looking for
a family pet who may not be
a purebred animal. In recent
years, the fuzzy, appealing
cocker-poodle crossbred
puppy has become a popular
candidate for adoption.
The veterinary profession
and the humane organiza
tions have much in common.
Each has its special task in
the field of animal welfare:
the veterinarian diagnosing
and prescribing the treat
ment and conservation of the
animals’ lives; the humane
organizations working for the
protection, relief and com
fort of the animals. In this
way, the veterinarian and the
humane organizations share
a common purpose in
preserving the life, health
and general well-being of
animals of all kinds.
