FIRST PLACE WINNER Ernest Lawrence, Henderson Junior High School eighth grader,
finished the 20-mile “Walk For Mankind” trek first in an amazing two hours and 20 minutes.
For those that are a little slow in the math department, that’s averaging seven minutes per
mile for 20 miles! “It was pretty hard but not too hard,” said Ernest. He came in first last year
also. Photo by Jerry McLaurin.

“A PURPOSE IN LIFE”
The first thing I read in the
newspaper is the Sports
Section. I suppose a great
many of you do the same
thing. Someone said, “The
front page reports man’s
failures, the sports page
reports his triumps.” At any
rate, I enjoy sports. Baseball
Season is here again. This is
my favorite sport. For many
years Bobby Richardson was
the allstar second baseman
of the New York Yankees. He
is now baseball coach at the
University of South Carolina.
Bobby is a committed
Christian. He has a wonder
ful testimony.
It goes like this:
“Keep your pride under in
victory. Keep the rules. Keep
faith with your comrades.
Keep a stout heart in defeat.
Keep a sound soul, a clean
mind and a healthy body.
There are rules to be
repeated before each ball
game.
When I graduated from
high school I had an
opportunity to fulfill an
ambition of many young
fellows - to enter professional
baseball! I signed with the
New York Yankees and
reported to their farm club in
Norfolk. I will never forget it.
This was my first time away
from home in a big city. The
fact that I knew no one, not
even to whom I should
report, was discouraging,
and made me down-hearted
and lonely. About this time I
received a letter from a
former coach in which he
quoted Matthew 6:33: ‘Seek
ye first the kingdom of God
and His righteousness; and
all these things shall be
added unto you.’ This
renewed my faith, brought
me closer to God, and things
were well.
The following year we were
in spring training and word
came that there was a boy
coming down from a high
classification club about
whom I noticed there was
much comment. I wondered
why, after I got to know him,
I found out. He was a
dedicated Christian, had
devoted his life fully to God,
and some of the things he
stood for were resented by
the older members, perhaps
because of the way they
wanted to live their lives. But
inwardly, they had a respect
and admiration that I'm sure
drew them closer to God, as I
was drawn.
We must have purpose in
life, and that purpose should
be to please God; to know
Him, to love Him and to walk
daily with Him.
Baseball is a profession full
of temptation, just as other
professions, and it is a
challenge to lead the Chris
tian life, but a verse that has
strengthened and challenged
me, because I know to claim
it means a completely
surrendered life. It is
Galatians 2:20, ‘I am
crucified with Christ, never
theless, I live; yet not I, but
Christ liveth in me; and the
life which I now live in the
flesh, I live by the faith of Son
of God, who loved me and
gave himself for me.’
I realize simply that it is
God who has given me the
ability, the opportunity and
certainly any supposed
earthly glory that might
come through playing ball. I
enjoy the sport I am in, but
only because I feel that this is
where God would nave me
serve Him.
Several years ago when I
accepted Christ as my
Saviour, I took John 3:16 at
its word ‘For God so loved
To The People of Flovilla
At the request of several citizens in the
county I agreed to place my name in
consideration for the position of County
Fax Assessor. I was accepted for the job
and was sworn in the first day of April. The
law’s of Georgia prohibit a tax assessor
from holding any municipal office,
consequently, I was required to resign
from the Flovilla City Council.
I tendered my resignation with
considerable regret because I considered
it a privilege to serve you and to be a
member of the forward thinking,
dedicated, professional city government
which is working diligently to promote the
best interests of our city. I will continue to
actively support the present and future
city government in any worthwhile
endeavor it undertakes.
F lovilla needs the civic-minded
support of all its citizens. We should all
become more concerned and convert the
concern into individual and collective
efforts that will correct certain conditions
and situations which currently over
shadow the commendable efforts of the
many citizens who genuinely care about
the city, and which will establish
progressive improvement as a way of life
in Flovilla. I am ready and anxious to
donate any capability I have toward the
attainment of such goals.

wonderful day when I made
this decision, and I am
thankful that He sent His Son

that I, through His grace,

that counts for eternity is our
personal relationship with
the Lord Jesus Christ.”
