EMC's Woman's Day Event
Was Highly Entertaining
By Mrs. Alma Redman
Butts County WTF
Publicity Chairman
All hearts were young and
gay at Central Georgia EMC
Woman’s Day held on May
11. 1976.
From the heart warming
devotional given by Mrs.
Adeal Maddox entitled
“Make Somebody Happy,”
the gist of which was “take a
little honey,” to the special
recognition of Mrs. T. D.
Weems for meritorious ser
vice, to the delightful
program, it was a gala
occasion.
The piece’ de resistance’
was a demonstration of
“Getting The Most From
Your Microwave Oven”
presented by Mrs. Karen
Witzleben, home economist,
W. D. Alexander Company.
With a magician’s skill,
scrambled eggs appeared
before our eyes in 45 seconds.
Crisp bacon cooked between
sheets of paper toweling
materialized at the rate of
one slice per minute. Mrs.
Witzleben made the point
that when cooking quantity,
add time.
Nutritious vegetables, cas
seroles and a roast were
things of beauty as well as
delicious, and were prepared
before our eyes in a matter of
minutes. Then presto! A cake
appeared in four minutes.
The demonstration was an
Epicurean’s dream and a
homemaker’s delight. One
could almost believe that
Mrs. Witzleben had rubbed
Aladdin’s lamp, so marve
lous were the results.
Now a panorama greeted
our eyes. Mrs. Sara Jean
Ponder, consumer relations
specialist, West Point Pep
perell, presented a unique
history lesson in the form of a
fashion show depicting two
hundred years of American
fashion. Did you know that
the Pilgrims, though usually
subdued in their dress,
sometimes wore brown or
orange? Moving swiftly from
the dress of wealthy colonial
women with their elegance
enhanced by panniers, the
display revealed the authen
tic dress of the woman who
moved westward wearing
her sunbonnet to protect her
skin from the sun since there
were no moisturizers in that
day. The pioneer woman,
dressed in apron and cap and
barefoot, was suitably garb
ed for working on the
frontier.
The 1800’s witnessed the
Empire gown reminiscent of
the high waist. In 1849, denim
was introduced on the
American scene. There were
two types the wishy-washy
and the All American denim.
The antebellum skirts got
fuller and fuller. Steel cage
crinoline supported hoops
added to the fullness of the

The bicycle built for two
promoted the Bloomer Girl
look which was really the
first pants suit. 1870 saw the
advent of the bustel remini
scent of the illustrations of
Little W'omen. The Gay 90’s
produced leg of mutton
sleeves and the small waist.
The Gibson Girl was an
idealization of the American
girl of the 1890’s as portrayed
by Clarke Dana Gibson.
The waist line dropped and
the bosom bulged during the
1900’s. With the passage of
the nineteenth amendment,
fashion taboos went out the
window and the flat-chested,
Charleston swinging Flapper
emerged. So did the one piece
bathing suit. In 1930 the Jean
Harlow look with platinum
blond hair was reincarnated.
During this period, movie
stars were imitated and
women achieved a natural
shape.
The 1940’s with its mascu
line look has been America’s
least interesting fashion
period. The padded bra and
return of the crinoline were
highlights of the 1950’5. In the
1960’5, known as the Space
Age, designers forgot that

MET SUNDAY
FOR REUNION
On Sunday, May 16th, the
Masonic Lodge at Worthville
was the meeting place for the
children, grandchildren and
greatgrandchildren of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Glen
Maddox for their annual
reunion.
Fifty-five were present to
enjoy the day together. The
adults did a lot of reminis
cing of things that had
happened since last year;
their children engaged in ball
games with a few grown ups
joining in.
At the noon hour a
sumptuous and delicious
dinner was enjoyed by
everyone. Those present
were: Mr. and Mrs. Law
rence Maddox, Mr. and Mrs.
Curry Cawthon, Mr. Cecil
Maddox and Mike, Miss
Renee Maddox, of Forest
Park; Mr. and Mrs. Frank
O’Neal, Mr. and Mrs. Jim
Braley and Joseph, Mr. Glen

Mr. and Mrs. Randall

ed. Typical of this period
were hot pants. With the
advent of the midi-skirt,
which women rejected, the
reign of the Paris couturier
came to an end. During this
time the caftan, sheath and
the oriental look became
popular. Such fabrics as duck
and knits came into vogue.
Mrs. Ponder spoke of
garments made from sheets,
quilted bedspreads and blan
kets. Dr. Joyce Brothers says
that the sexiest woman today
is the home sewer.
Models in the fashion show
were Ellen Boyd, Patsy
Cook, Carol Ham, Betty
Lewis, Rita Mangham,
Grace Meredith, Livia
O’Hara, Ann O’Neal, Marilyn
Poole. Carol Potter, Carol
Weaver, Janice Cronic, Joan
Gilbert, and Blanche Wilson.
Mrs. Ponder narrated the
show in a humorous, know
ledgable and animated man
ner. So entertaining was the
exhibit that the time fairly
flew.
Door prizes were awarded
to Plina Mays, Martha
Weaver, Nadine Menz, Elena
Carter, Ruby Thomas, Eliza

An appetizing luncheon
was served the guests at the
close of the meeting.
