Asa result of extensive
research, some of the myths
about tornadoes (e.g. winds
push walls in; houses
“explode” because of the
sudden low pressure; the
southwest corner of the
basement is the safest; etc.)
are being questioned and
even disputed. Accordingly
the U.S. Weather Service last
year revised its tornado
safety rules somewhat. For a
reminder as we move into the
storm season again (and for
those who didn’t get the
message the first time),
some storm safety guidelines
are below. Although many of
them will have a familiar
ring, study them carefully
for they are, indeed different.
In office buildings Go to
an interior hallway on the
lowest floor or to the
designated shelter area.
In factories Workers
should move quickly to the
section of the plant offering
the greatest protection in

plans.
In homes The basement
offers the greatest safety.
Seek shelter under sturdy
furniture if possible. Homes
without basements may offer
protection in the center part
of the structure on the lowest
floor. Keep windows wide
open but stay away from
them. A small interior room,
such as a bathroom or closet,
may be best.
Mobile homes and cars
These are particularly vul
nerable to tornadoes. If in a
car or trailer home, seek
refuge in a sturdy building,
ditch, culvert or ravine.
In general Don’t seek
refuge in a large room, such
as an auditorium or gymna
sium. Keep a battery-power
ed radio available for use
while under cover. An
all-clear will be announced
by radio at the appropriate
time.
