Flint Circuit Public Defender
Appointed To Help Indigent
On July 1, 1976, Alex
Crumbley, Henry County
native, became Flint
Judicial Circuit’s first
public defender. His
office Is located on
Covington Street In
McDonough. He will be
defending cases where it
has been pre-determined
that defendants do not
have funds for attorneys.
“The idea Is'simply to
provide as _ good a
defense for the Indigent
as would be expected If
they were able to pay,”
the attorney says of his
appointment.
Hie appointment came
through the Georgia
Criminal Justice Council
which was set up by
Executive Order of
Governor George Busbee
and given authority to
launch public defender's
offices throughout the
state. The Council has
begun jillot projects,
funded mainly through
Law Enforcement Assis
tance Administration
(LEAA) monies. Henry
County is part of the
pilot program. Appoint
ment approval came
from Judge Hugh D.
Sosebee.

defenders in large urban
areas. Henry County is
part of the Flint Judicial
Circuit which also
includes Butts, Monroe,
and Lamar Counties.
The public defender’s
duties will take a burden
from the court since
counsel for indigents has
previously come from
the private bar upon
appointment by the
Court.
Mr. Crumbley will be
defending only those in
the Flint River Judicial
area that are determined
by the court or other
officials to be indigent.
“I will be calling on
members of the private
bar for assistance from
time to time,” Mr.
Crumbley told the
Weekly-Advertiser.
Mr. Crumbley is a
native of Kelleytown. He
has been associated for
the last few years with
Weltner, Kidd
Crumbley, and Tate, an
Atlanta law firm. He
previously practiced law
in McDonough with
attorney Ernest M.
Smith.
The attorney is a
graduate of Henry
County High School. He
