Jesus Christ described His
work to His disciples this
way: “It is meat and drink
for Me to do the will of Him
who sent Me until I have fin
ished His work.”
The Bible tells us that
man’s chief work is not his
own work, but rather doing
the work of God. “This is the
work of God, that you be
lieve on Him whom He has
sent.” The highest work is the
furtherance of the Gospel and
the service of the purposes of
God.

FORT FREDERICA National Monument on Saint Simons
Island built by General James Edward Oglethorpe in 1736 was
the most expensive British fortification in America. It was

colonies against the Spaniards in Florida. (PRN)

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga.
-- The Marshes of Glenn
stretch and yawn in the
Georgia sun signaling travelers
to slow down, unwind and
relax among the Golden Isles.
A soft Atlantic breeze,
rustling through intricate
vines of Spanish moss on St.
Simons, whispers of daring
British troops, old-time
plantation regattas, a
romantic lighthouse, and
beaches just right for shell
collecting.
The glossy-leafed cassenas
remember Jesuit priests and
Franciscan fathers who came
among early Indian
inhabitants during the 1500s.
Sparkling white sand beaches
recall rough and tumble
pirates who plundered the
area in the years before the
plantation era.
Visitors cross St. Simons
Causeway onto Gascoigne
Bluff, site of an estate first
established by one of the
wealthiest planters of the
island on land granted by
King George II to Captain
Gascoigne. A right turn onto
King’s Way passes the Sea
Island Golf Course (on St.
Simons Island), and anyone
with a camera is sure to want
a snapshot of the beautiful
entrance lane framed by
historic live oaks.
Just down the lane near
the clubhouse, tabby ruins of
Retreat Plantation are visible.
It was here at Retreat that
the world-famous sea island
cotton was first grown in the
United States.
Farther down King’s Way
at Ocean Boulevard, is St.
Simons village whose pier
beckons fishermen of all ages.
(Equipment for fishing and
crabbing is available nearby.)
From the pier, it’s a short
walk over to the Lighthouse
and Museum of Coastal
History. Exhibits here depict
the cultural life and history
of coastal Georgia. Museum
hours: daily, Tuesday
through Saturday, 10 a.m.
until 5 p.m. and on Sundays
between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m.

Boulevard leads to the beach
and a resort popular with
natives and newcomers alike.
Back along Demere Road,
route of the old military trace
leading to Ft. Frederica, is an
imposing vista of Bloody
Marsh Battlefield where a
British victory in 1742
assured English would be the
dominant language. r
Frederica Roads unfolds at
a leisurely pace through the
center of St. Simons Island
tempting visitors with
one-of-a-kind shops, £trt
gallerys, and two of coastal
Georgia’s best known points
of interest: Christ Church and
Fort Frederica.
It was near the present
church building that John
and Charles Wesley, founders
of the Methodism, preached
in 1736. This structure dating
from 1884, and the
surrounding cemetery are
open to the public daily from
2 to 5 p.m. Those taking a
quiet walk here may discover
the oldest tombstone bearing
the date, 1803.
Around a bend just beyond
Christ Church is Fort
Frederica, former
headquarters for General
James Edward Oglethorpe’s
military operations against
Spain. Much of the old town
of Frederica has been
uncovered and its exciting
story is told by exhibits at
the Park Museum and
through demonstrations
during the summer season.
Now a National Park, Ft.
Frederica is open to the
public year round from 8
a.m. to 5 p.m.
A dug-out canoe, a relic of
once-popular regattas''
between St. Simons and
- island plantations, can
be viewed on Sea Island near
the entrance to a famous
resort hotel.
St. Simons/Sea Island
intrigues visitors year round
with history, golf, water
sports and an unhurried pace.

TAX TIPS
TAX AUDIT
TIME LIMITS
When can you relax in the
knowledge that an income
tax return will not be
audited? Ordinarily after
three years, but if you failed
to report at least a fourth of
your actual gross income, the
statute of limitations is
extended to six years.
