THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA
Jackson High Red Devils
Against Jones County I
b>
Frank Hearn
Time and Tide wait for no
man. A scarce ten months
have gone with the wind; not
long for one to savor the
fruits of a victorious nine and
one ’75 football season. That
familiar aroma now filters
through one’s nostrils nightly
over on Red Devil Hill. The
scent of fresh cut Tift
Bermuda, a dash of chalk
dust, mixed thoroughly with
the sweat of young gridiron
gladiators permeates these
hot August evenings. You can
smell approaching football
season...A reminder that the

ball team awaits their
curtain call tomorrow night
on the Hill, Home Play
ground of the Devils.
How does one encore
nine wins and one loss by a
scant dozen inches? Last
year’s team posted the best
Devil record in decades.
They ended the season
ranked among the state’s
elite. The graduating Seniors
left both a legacy and a
target for their cohorts in ’76.
Only trouble is, Ghee Whiz,
ten other teams on the
schedule will be aiming at
the target, giving a little
extra to knock off the Devils
this season. The old “Top
Gun Theory” you know.
Somebody always riding into
town thinking he’s a bit
quicker, better. What price
success?
Anew coaching staff holds
the reins on this year’s team
comprised of veteran war
horses at the end and in the
backfield, young inexperi
enced sweathogs up front and
a schedule to negotiate
reminiscent of the seven
labors of Hercules. Tommy
Carmichael has ascended to
the head coaching throne
upon the departure of Danny
Blue to Heritage High in
Rockdale County. Coach
Carmichael is no stranger to
this year’s team. In ’75 he
was the co-ordinator of an
offense that averaged 20 plus
points a game. Donny
Henderson rode in from
Miller County to coach the
Defense. Bo Wolfe strode
down from Russell High to
coach the line. James
Stancil, recent graduate of
Albany State, begins his
rookie coaching season with
the Devils. Bill Nelson
traveled 5 blocks from
Henderson Jr. High on North
Mulberry to coach the fleet
Devil backs. The producers
and directors have rehearsed
for six weeks, but only one in
full costume. Their leading
cast of characters will read
like this:
Offensively the Devils will
run from the “Tee” or the
“Eye” depending on the
tactical situation and enemy
