Booklet Gives
Motorcycling
Safety Rules
There was a time when it
seemed that only your most
daring of friends rode
motorcycles. Now chances
are your next door neighbor
or your boss might ride his or
her “bike” to work. And you
just might be shopping
around for one yourself.
Unfortunately as the popu
larity of motorcycles has
gone up, so have the accident
and death rates.
The National Highway
Traffic Safety Administra
tion has put out anew booklet
that gives advice on what you
should know both before and
after you begin driving a
motorcycle. It also includes
information on how to buy
the right motorcycle to fit
your needs. For your free
copy of Motorcycle Safety,
send a postcard to the
Consumer Information Cen
ter, Dept. 61, Pueblo,
Colorado 81009.
A helmet is the most
important piece of individual
protective equipment. Statis
tics confirm that safety
helmets save lives and
reduce the extent of injuries
in the event of accidents.
Many good helmets are
available. In choosing a
helmet, buy one which
contains the symbol “DOT”
on the outer rear surface or
one containing a safety
certification inside indicat
ing approval by one or the
several non-governmental
organizations interested in
helmet safety, such as the
Snell Memorial Foundation
or the National Safety
Helmet Council of America.
If you will be carrying a
passenger, he or she should
also wear a helmet.
Part of your clothing for
daytime cycling should be
orange or some other eye
catching color. Reflective
tape on clothing, helmet and
the motorcycle help make
you visible at night. And
always drive with your lights
on. A high percentage of car
to cycle collisions happens
because the auto driver
failed to see the motorcyclist
in time.
Avoid offensive driving.
Don’t weave in and out of
traffic stalled in traffic jams,
or drive on shoulders to get
ahead of other traffic. Avoid
tailgating and excessive lane
weaving in traffic.
Think about installing
rim-locks so the tire will stay
on the rim after a blowout.
And, if the crisis of a blowout
strikes, don’t use your
brakes. Ease off the throttle
and slow down gradually.
When your speed is low
enough, carefully pull off the
road. Keep a firm grip on the
handlebars throughout.
