DEMONSTRATION ON
RADARANGE GIVEN
AT STARK CLUB
Twenty-five members of
the Stark Friendship Club
were present at the Com
munity House on Tuesday
afternoon, February 22, for
the monthly meeting. The
session was begun by singing
“America”, followed by the
Pledge to the Flag and
prayer led by Mrs. Lucy
Jenkins.
The roll was called and
minutes of the previous
month were read. Mrs.
Bessie McMichael, presi
dent. welcomed the members
and one visitor, Mrs. Roddy,
a guest of Mrs. Doris Watts.
She then gave a brief tribute
to four members, deceased in
recent years. She also ex
pressed "the regrets of the
club on losing Mrs. Lucy
Jenkins, who is moving away
at an early date.
The hostess list for the
ensuing year was discussed
and it was decided to use the
same list as the previous
year unless some member
desired to be placed on
different time.
It was voted to serve a
chicken stew on Friday
night, March 18th, and Mrs.
Roberta Harris was named
chairman of the project. She
selected as her committee,
Mrs. Nellie Hencley, Mrs.
Jane Gray, Mrs. Bill McMi
chael, Mrs. Janie McMurray,
Mrs. Wilma Nash, Mrs.
Grace Pafford and Mrs.
Hilda Harris.
Mrs. Elaine Elliott brought
to the attention of the club the
deplorable condition of the
littered highways around the
dumpsters in the community.
Volunteers were asked to
form a group and call on the
proper authorities to see if
anything could be done to
apprehend and punish the
persons guilty of so abusing
the use of the dumpsters.
The president introduced
Mrs. Gwen Juhlin, who is a
member of The Central
Georgia EMC. She gave a
demonstration on cooking in
and caring for the radar
range. Mrs. Juhlin is a
member of the Task Force
and has given the demonstra
tions on many occasions. She
cooked a casserole, dessert,
herb rolls, frozen foods and
vegetables. These foods were
served buffet style, along
with cookies baked by
hostesses for the month. The
tables where the group was
seated were beautifully and
appropriately decorated in
red. white and blue, patri
otically honoring George
Washington, whose birthday
was on the day of the
meeting. Strips of blue
centered the entire length of
the tables, with red candies
scattered along the blue
background. An American
flag graced one table while
the other contained an
arrangement of artificial
peach blossoms. The oven
was supplied through
courtesy of Polk Tire and
Appliance Cos. and was set up
by Mr. Gerald Davis.
The demonstration was
very interesting and in
formative, especially to
those women who own a
radarange and was enjoyed
by everyone present.

Science Class Completes
Survey on Home Insulation
A survey on insulation in
Butts County homes was
recently completed by Don
ald Henderson’s Environ
mental Science class at
Jackson High School and has
concluded that those homes
surveyed do not have
adequate ceiling, window
and-or wall insulation.
The study suggested that
improvement of home insula
tion would go a long way in
reducing the possibility of
another natural gas shortage
such as the one Butts County
experienced during the win
ter Of 1977.
Henderson explained that
the survey was done on 110
homes in Butts County. The
questions were designed to
demonstrate how much can
be saved on gas and
electrical bills by having
adequate insulation:
Does your home have six
inches of insulation in the
tool and ceiling? Yes- 02,
No ■t<; Do you have a

Shelled nuts will keep

refrigerator.
firespiace? Yes-32, No-78;
’Do you have storm doors and
windows? Yes-40, No-70;
Are your outside walls
insulated with a minimum of
three and one-half inches of
insulation? Yes-62, No-48.
Henderson said the results
were predictable in that 44
percent of the homes did not
have adequate ceiling insu
lation. 71 percent did not
have a fireplace, 64 percent
did not have storm windows
and doors and 44 percent did
not have adequate wall
insulation.
Henderson said that
various studies have shown
that proper insulation not
only saves money during the
winter months but also
during the summer. He said
that according to the Blue
Midge Electric Membership
Corporation, if a home (200
square feet) is adequately
insulated, the owner can save
appi • vimutely $466 annually.
