THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE IS THE SUPREME LA IF.
FORT GAINES, GA., FRIDAY, APRIL 11. 1902.
Perhaps the most enthusiastic meet
ing ever held in Fort Gaines was con
vened at Coleman Hall last Friday
nigljt in response to a a call for a gen
eral mass meeting of our citizens ,to
discuss the question of a new school
building for Fort Gaines.
The.e was a very large crowd out,
and the presence of the ladies and
children added more interest to the
meeting. -
The assembly was called to order at
8:30 o'clock with Mr. J. E. Peterson
in the chair and Mr. T. G. Polhill
secretary.
After a few very appropriate re
marks by the chairman announcing
the purpose of the meeting, a number
of talks were made by different ones,
each highly in sympathy with the
movement on foot. As each speaker
arose the cheers that greeted him
proved beyond a doubt that the piople
were a unit and would decide it once
lor all in favor of a new school build
ing. Out of all present not a dissent
ing voice was heard.
After an hour or more of enthus
iastic speeches, on inolion, the presi
dent appointed the following gentle
men to act as a committee to devise
the best means of raising the money
for a building: B. M. Turflipseed,
Chairman, J. E. Paullin, J. W. Grim
sley. E. W. Killingsworth, Geo. R.
Irwin, A. W. Holley, W. A. McAllister,
J. I>. McKissack, N. 11. McLendon,
G. 11. Bisby and T. G. Polhill.
The committee lias gone to work in
earnest, and already I heir subscrip
tion lists have quite an encouraging
appearance. The outlook is all that
the most sanguine could hope for.
Having bought out the bankrupt
stock of T. J. Lightfoot, amounting to
about #IOOO, I am prepared to offer to

An Abbeville theatrical troup, com
posed of some of the best people of
our sister town, came over last Satur
day night and played “Tot, the Miner’s
Daughter,” to a very good house at
Coleman Hall.
Our neighbors are to be congratula
ted on the evidence of talent which
marked this performance. The play
was rendered in a manner that would
do credit to professionals, and every
body was well pleased.
Col. Burt Hays, the geinal manager
of the troup. did some good work in
getting out an audience, hi- courteous
manner having made quite a favorable
impression on all with whom lie came
in contact. It was not known until
Saturday afternoon that the troup
would be here, else they might hav»
had a still greater number of-pectators.
'I here were sixteen in a l composing
the party that came over, five of whom
were ladies. All made friends here,
and may feel assured of a cordial wel
come and liberal patronage should they
see lit to repeat th'dr visit.
