BROTHER REVEALS GUILT,
Bechtel Killed tis c *fiter an.l Remorse
of Conscience Drive Him to
Commit Suicide.
At Allentown, p a ., Thomas B«ft
tel, who was hf-id waiting investiga
tion for the fnurder of Lis sister, Ma
bel Bechtel, at. their home a few days
ago, committed suicide Thursday af
ternoon in ibis cell in the central po
lice station. The police consider his
act as a .practical acknowledgment of
Bechtel’s guilt. Several relatives and
■friends were admitted to sev him dur
ing the afternoon. About 4 o’clock
he called across the corridor to Allred
•Eckstein, Miss Bechtel's- affianced
lover, who is «Jso held ’pending the
coroner’s inquest:
“-Hello, Ai, ane you there?”
"Yes,” answered Eckstein;
Bechtel responded: “I wish you
were here with me now that we might
die together.”
These were the last words heard
from Bechtel. A short time later he
was found dead with his throat cut.
How he .got the knife is not known.
He was carefully searched when
placed in the cell and no weapon was
found. There is a rumor to the affect
that a newsboy passed the knife to
him in the cell.
The suicide of Bechtel has, been
followed b.y the police officials telling
the story of the murder or Miss Bech
tel as gathered by them. It starts
with Thursday, October la, when
Eckstein accompanied Miss Bechtel to
Philadelphia. He left her there and
returned home. Weisenberg met. her
in Philadelphia and accompanied her
to Allentown, leaving there Sunday at
4 p. ms. and .’Teaching AUqjjtmvn four
hours later. 'They went to a certain
place together, where they remained
until midnight. Thomas Bechtel heard
of this and being strenuously opposed
to Weisenberg, he upbraided his sis
ter xn her room upon her return
home. ; He struck her a powerful blow
on the cheek, causing her to fall hea
vily against the bureau dead. Mem
bers of the family held a council and
decided upon the disposition of the
body and clothing as found. Charles
Bechxel’s■ lather’s hatchet was used in
striking m. blow on the head of the
dead girl’to give semblance to assault.
This happened immediately before
midnight. The body was concealed in
the home until Monday, when it was
placed in the areaway, where it was
found Tuesday morning. Eckstein
knew nothing of the murder, the po
lice say.
Information charging murder has
been lodged against the whole Bechtel
family.
John and Charles Bechtel and Ec.’k
stein were committed to jail inf de
fault of ’ssoo bail each as witnesses.
Mrs. "Bechtel and daughters were al
lowed to go. no bail bei'ug required.
SCKsPTIjRE QUOTED IN/ DIVORCE CASE.
Judge Barrow, at. Ssivanneh, Reads a
Chapter of St,' John to Jury.
Judgre Barrow, off the superior court,
in Savannah, Ga.,' Thursday gave to a
jury for its consideration is a divorce
. v
case tome -scriptural law bearing on
the case.
Judge Barrow, taking up a Bible,
read liram the eighth chapter of JSt.
John:
“Now Aloses, in the law, commanded
us that such should be stoned, but
what gayest thou? This they said,
tempting Mm that they mi gin‘have to
accuse him, but Jesus stooped down
and, with His finger wrote on the
ground, as though He heard them not.
‘He that is without sin among you, let
him first east a stone at her." ”
He quoted this chapter to show the
jurors that the party who brings an
accusation against another must come
into court with clean skirts and a
clear conscience.
After being out a few minutes, the
jury rendered a verdict granting a di
vorce to both parties.

tells his experience in the following
words: He says, “Sometime in Septem

■across the small of my back, directly
■over the kidneys. I paid small attention
to this at first, thinking it would pass

pain centered through my left hip and
pain across down my left leg

So Mr. iPlang

Continuing, tee says: “I did not
know the cause of the trouble, but
I am led t© believe now that it was
first brought about by jumping in and
out of the wagon and in some way I
may have strained my back.
“I was constantly growing worse,” he
continues, “and I became very much
alarmed about my condition. ‘I knew
that something had to be done or serious
results were sure to follow. I went to
a specialist here in Sherman, and under
went a rigid examination.”
Then he relates how the doctor told
hint that it was a serious case, but that
ha could cure him for fifty dollars.
