SENATOR HANNA ON TRUSTS.
From Speech of John Wesley Gaines,
of Tennessee, June 2nd, 1900.
Con. Record. Appendix,
page 684. House
Representatives.
Again, Senator HANNA, in the
course of the campaign in Ohio last
fall, warmly advocating the trust
loving Mr. Nash in his candidacy
for his election, at different times
thus showed he was the bold ad
vocate and friend of trusts.
Trusts are good tilings.
There is not a trust in the United
States.
What harm can these trusts do the
people of this country?
It may be that the trusts will do the
people harm. If they do, the Republi
can party will take care bf that.*
How, I ask? By lei’ ling all anti
trust laws, as recently done in Ohio,
and smothering those in Congress?
It is evolution in business. (Trusts.)
There is no such thing-.
I say there are no trusts. If there
are, prove it.
We know our business.
“We,” not wee-wee, but Wl£.
giant “we,” that was not made to
be dqwned as long as the; Repub
lican party is in power, State and
National.
The trusts have the best men in the
country at their head.
I believe in their organization.
The formation of trusts is a step
forward.
The combination of corporations is
simply the evolution of business.
I am not defending the trusts, nor
am I repudiating a single word or
phrase in the Republican platform.
Who did repudiate your (Ohio)
platform against trusts'upon which
Mr. Nash was elected last
fall? Your Republicaii legislature,
“at the dictation of the bosses at
Washington and trustsj magnates at
New York,” by killing the “Rus
sell Bill No. io.”

Mr. Lott’s Letter too Late.
Editor Breeze—: In ray opinion
tlie le'tter of Mr. J. S. Lott, pub
lished in the last issue of your
paper, comes too Tate to accomplish
the purpose which it seeks. The
object sought are high and noble,
and the spirit of the letter is to be
commended; but the time for com
promise, so far as the democratic
party is concerned, has past. The
regular organized democracy,
through its proper authorities, held
a primary election, delegates were
elected, a convention assembled,
candidates were nominated and the
time for the final ballot is close at
hand. And the question naturally
arises, who can undo what the party
has done?
There is; an implied compact or
agreement between the cindicate:
who have accepted the nominal ion,
ami every man who voted in the
primary election, to stand by the
democratic ticket till the last vote
is polled. No candidate can come
out of the race at this late day
honorably. It would mean a deser
tion of liis party at a time when il
would do the most harm. Any
honorable-man would prefer defeat
at tlie polls rather than submit to
such a proposition.
The democratic party made an
honest effort for peace, but their
overtures were not considered ; and
if there is wrangling and discord,
the populist are responsible for it.
Let the men who want peace vote
for the party which stands for peace
and rhen we will have peace.
