The New Year came in covered with
the white snow. God grant that it may
be emblematic of the return to its pris
tine purity of our suffering country dur
ing this year!
Let us make our reolutions to do Let
tor in every respect. Let us go to work
—the panacea for the ills that now af
flict us. We will hear less murmuring
about hard times if we all were at work.

II ON. R. 11. 1111.1..
The gentleman who represents and is
re-elected from the Ninth Congressional
Distriet has been performing peculiar
gyrations at the National Capital.
This action consisted chiefly in some
interviews that Mr. Hill had with th ■
correspondents of Northern newspapers,
himself in favor of Hayes

Governor Smith, we suppose, is tired
of staying at home, and feels like going
abroad. Jle has made a go<xl (Jovei nor,
but that is no reason! that he should be
made to oust a more competent man.
Mr. llill bases his claim, in plain
terras, upon his greatstatemanship. His
experience in Congress is very limited,
and he would find a minority in the
Senate a very different thing from the
majority in the House. We would re
mind the supporters of Mr. Hii.l that
most great men have distinguished tie ni
sei ves in the House more thoroughly
than Mr. Hill has as yet; and that it
is also a good place for would-be great
men to become extinguished.
