“OUR AMBITION IS TO MAKE A VERACIOUS WORK, RELIABLE IN ITS STATEMENTS, CANDID IN ITS CONCLUSIONS, AND JUST INITS VIEWS”
VOL-II
A JOKE ON JOHN L.
Borne of Ilis Friends Propose Him
for Mayo r o f Bos Ion.
Boston, July 14—There is a
rumor about town that a strong
wing of the democracy urges the
nomination of the gient pugilist,
John L. Sullivan, for next mayor of
cultured Boston. That the report is
not altogether an idle one is proved
by the aitentiou given it by an in
fluential morning paper, which says;
“John L. Sullivan is unquestionably
a big man nowadays—in some peo
ple’* estima lion—but wo are not
quite prepared to believe the report
that he is to be put in the field for
mayor by the Boston democrats.”
Hon. M. M.Cuniff, the democratic
Loss, was asked what lie thought
about it. “What do I think of
that?” said he. I don’t know
whatto thi.ok of it. Tibs is the
first intimation I received that John
was_ in the field, That may be
merely a little paper joke, but still
it may be serious. Stranger things
have occurred. Sullivan is very pop
ular, arid with the present incum
bent opposed to him John Would be
eure to make a tough fight. Hero
in Boston I can imagine somo good
aristocrats and club men standing
up for him. He would draw largely
from the Algonquin and Somerset
clubs, where hois very popular.”
“The man who arrested Sullivan”
is cow considered about the biggest
man mNashville. Everywhere he
goes he is surrounded by a crowd
of men and boys who viaut'to hear

WHAT A WOMAN CAN DO.
There are lots of things that a
womau can do that a man can not.
I ; She can come to a conclusion
without the slightest trouble of
reasoning on it, aud no sane man can
do that.
Six of them can talk at once and
get along first rate, and no two men
can no that.
She can safely slick fifty pins iu
lier dress while lie is getting one un
der bis thumb nail,
She is as cool as a cucumber in
half a dozen tight dresses and skirts
while a man wid sweat and foam
and growl in one loose skirt.
She can talk as sweet as peaches
and cream to the woman she hates,
while two men would be punching
each other’s head before they had
exchanged ten words.
She can throw a Btone with a
curve that would be a fortune to a
base ball pitcher.
She can say “No,” and stick to it
for a time. She may also say “No”
in such a low voice that it means
“Yes.”
She can sharpen a lead pencil if
you give her plenty of time and
plenty of pencils.
She can dance all night in a pair
of shoes two sizes too small fi»r her,
and enjoy every minute of the time.
She can appreciate a kiss from
her husband 75 years after the mar
riage ceremony is performed.
She can go to church and after
wards tell you what eveiy woman in
tho congregation bad on. and in
Eonie rare instances can give you
some faint idea of what the text was.
She can walk half the night wjth
a colicky baby in her arms without
ever expressing the desire of murder
ing the infant.
She can do more in a minute than a
man Can do in an hour, aud do it bet
