Cook had the misfortune to loose a very fine cow a few days jago. Rev. T. A. Harris was in town a few days ago representing the Ath¬ ens Banner. AVe are glad to state that Mrs. Effie Gary has about recovered from her recent illness. The young folks had a very enjoy¬ able socciable at Air. C. A. Wilder’s last Saturday night. The Literary Society gave a free ptertainment at the academy last (Friday night. A good crowd was present. Rev. AI. L. Carswell was not able to fill his appointment at this place las Saturday and Sunday on account of sickness. One of our young kids went fishing last Saturday night and caught 25 minnows, which made him a fine Sun¬ day morning breakfast .. G. P. Gary lias purchased him a rubber stamp with his name on it, and he lias also purchased a Prince Albert coat and a Derby hat. Look out, girls; lie will be around soon. The gentleman who let the little gray mule get away from him some time ago crossed the creek last Sun¬ day, hut he managed to keep him there that time by tying a 20-foot rope around his neck. AA e guess the little gray saw a hard time. J. J. Bicker. BOWERSVILLE. J. II. Maxwell, of Elberton, was in town Friday. An infant of Mr. Bunyan Bowers died last week. Wilder Roberts visited Athens last week on business. The Dramatic Club will give an entertainment soon. Mr. Samuel Burns is on a visit to relatives in South Carolina. Harry Tucker is attending the Bowersville High School. Mrs. Looney commenced her mu¬ sic class at the academy last Monday. Several of our citizens were in at¬ tendance at Carnesville court last week. Rev. M. E. Porter will preach at the Baptist church next Sunday night. Otho David, of Madison county, who has been at his home sick, has returned to school. The little folks of Bowersville have an interesting Literary Club which meets every Friday night. Prof. Looney commenced his com¬ position class Saturday. His lectures every Saturday morning will he in- testing and instructive. Ell Aytch. CROAIER’S MILL. A mad flog was seen in this sect ion last Friday. The farmers of this section are busy planting corn. Rev. J. J. Beck preached an inter¬ esting sermon at Zidon last Sunday. Alessrs. D. B. Phillips and AV. AL Roach are doing a good business ter¬ racing land. Air. John Bond and his mother, of Banks county, visited relatives in this community last week. It is quite early for young Crows, hut nevertheless, Air. C. B. Crow is blessed with one. It’s a boy. There is a young man iq our neigh¬ borhood who is not a hit of expense when he goes courting. The grip seems to be epidemic, and the doctors are busy. The cook goes on a strike when there is sickness iu the family. Sheriff Jim Roberts says La Grippe is nothing hut a poor man’s had cold. Alaking the Elberton railroad a broad gauge has been indefinitely postponed we learn. AL Al. Richardson has fixed up the hall above his store house in good style for the Knights of Honor. It is a mistake to suppose that all the peaches in this section are killed, but the crop is undoubtedly cut short. There is a great deal of sickness iu town, principally colds and influenza the result of the changeable weather. One of the strongest evidences in favor of our school is the almost dai¬ ly increase in patronage. AVe are glad to note this testimony of appreci¬ ation, and feel quite sure that it will continue to he so, as the basis of our school is founded upon principles that are bound to succeed. AMERICAN UNION. The editor of the Shoal Creek Echo thinks that this is a free country— too free. The first session of the school at this place closed this week. The sec¬ ond session will open out in July. J. E. Bond Esq., has returned from his trip from Nashville, Tcnn., and makes a very interesting report of that city. The demand for guano continues to be in excess of the supply on hand. The will have to content themselves with less than they were expecting. Airs. Suddath, consort of Uncle Thomas Suddath, died at her home on Rocky Branch last Thursday night and was taken to Hall county for bu¬ rial. 0 Air. S. J. Collins, living near Pitt¬ man’s bridge, died Tuesday night. The cause of death was from a severe strain received while lifting some heavy sacks of guano about a week ago. W. ,T. Whitehead and R.S.D. La¬ nier, with their wives, came near be¬ ing drowned at MeCleskey’s bridge last Sunday hy the overturning of a batteau.
