It Was Right.
Our last grand jury reei mmended that
our Ordinary be paid 825 for extra
vices, which we think was not only
generous but a ju&t act, and for which
we give them commendation.
Read Them.
To-day we publish the general
sentments of the grand jury for the
Term of the Superior Court, and also
full synopsis of the business transacted,
which will be read with, interest by
county subscribers.
Died.
Air. Alexander Brantly, aged
21 21 years vears died died at nt the the residence residence nf of
grand father, Mr. T. Ilollan, last
day, in this county. Mr. Brantly
been in bad health for a long time. The
bereaved family has our sympathies.
Fire.
Mr. E. K. Anthony, of Wilkes county,
nephew of Gen. Toombs, had his
ling house burned on Monday. So rapid
was the progress of the flames that the
family barely escaped. Everything in
the house was burned. We have pot
heard the particulars, or the origin of
the tire, but supi>ose it was accidental.
Convalescent.
The friends of Mr. J. N. T. Jones,
formerly of this eputtty, now of Jefferson
county, will be glad to hear that Ills wife,
Mrs. M. M. Jones, who has for some
time been dangerously ill, is steadily
improving and hopes are
for her speedy restoration to good
health.
Court Expenses.
The total expenses to the county for
court purposes last week, were £563.50.
These expenses are above the average,
as the late session of the Superior Court
was the longest held in our countv for
years. The dockets were all cleared of
the most important cases, which will
doubtless make the next August Term
short, and by no means so expensive.

they existed, to the satisfaction of every

Deserved compliment.
The grand jury, in their general pro
sentiments, published in another column
to-day. does our County Commissioners
the honor to compliment them upon tlieir

of the county affairs. We have Iiad an

the affairs of which are or can be,

While on this subieet we bee to rn-.ke
one suggestion. It is admitted by all
that these gentlemen have labored
dilligently and faithfully for the public
good, aud aie certainly entitled to com

nothing) aud if our Representative will,
at the next meeting of the Legislature,
procure the passage of a law granting
our County Commissioners a proper com

justice, and we beleive would meet the
hearty approval of the people of the

Much Obliged.
During last week, (court week) our
subscription lists received many acces
sions of good and true names, for which
we are much obliged. Few, indeed are
aware of the trouble, expense, labor, and
delicate care necessary to be exercised
in the publication of a paper, and we feel
proud to know that there are those who
appreciate our efforts to give, them a
good county paper. Often unjustly cen
sured, motives, words and actions mis
construed, the life of the editor is by no
means always a happy one ; but when
we find a liigh-minded, intelligent peo
pie, possessed of liberal views, extending
to us its friendship and its patronage,
we feel encouraged to promise our old
as well as our new subscribers that The
Democtat shall not fall a hair’s breadth
below the high standard it has chosen
for its course. Our aim is to do justice,
ami, so far as in our power lies, to pro
tcct and advance the interests of our
patrons, and the public ; and when we
fail in this it is an error of the head and
not of the heart. To the generous and
liberal minded people of Taliaferro, we
extend our grateful thanks for their
support and personal friendship, arnljts
sure them it shall be our watchful care
to deserve it throughout all the future.
