THE DEMOCR AT. W. D. P.LLIVAV, Editor k Proprietor. FRIDAY, AUGUSTS, 1871*. MINOR TOPICS*. On On tunf the eyeumg of w«l»ooi,. Vednesday the non, 30tli tilt., Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Howell gave the people of White Plains and vicinity one of those delightful entertainments for which they aie f famous. lf It consisted . , of - some sweet music, vocal and instruwen tal, by Mrs. ll’s. music class, which was followed bv a quaint opeietta. in which all nf the characters were of the Mother goose people. This was followed by a play gotten up by Mrs. H. intended to illustrate the costumes, manners and music of “fifty years ago." It was exe¬ cuted splendidly. Indeed, there was a universal expression of approval of the whole entertainment by the very large audience that gave most respectful at¬ tention JuMM to the very last. If the people of White Plains would give Dr. H. a mod f ‘ we trust th.y will * »rd „ • larger ratronuge, which they certainly sboulddo, they could be favored with such entertainments often. He SBBL and his accomplished wife are such and such citizens as any community should feel prouri to have. [Commuiiicoted. ] In Memoriair. .. Mrs. Mary Gardiner r s Jones, t whose > death was announced in the last week ’3 issue of this paper, had long been a most respectable and respected citizen of this county. More than thirty years ago, she came among us from her native county Warrtn, as Miss Mary 4Vright, and soon established a strong hold upon the tne affections anecuous of oi an all who w do iortnea formed her nei ac- ac quamtauce. In August 184i she " as maitied to Mr. Benjamin Jones, and for sixteen years sbe performed the part nf a faithful and devoted wife. In the dclicate relation of step-mother, she 50 demeaned herself as to win. not the res I™. pect alone, but the warm affection of her step-children. It may in truth be . said that she did well her part * in every particular, ... and « good , words went . With mentioned. Toi nioie than twenty-five years she was a member of the Crawford ville vine uapMSi Baptist bijiirtn. Cluirch a A few tew vears years ago aco she trasferred her connection to the Powelton Baptist Church, of which she was a member at e the time of her death. She ever aclor ed her profession bv by a a meek meek, nnobtriiaivo uno itrusive nictv piety which which charmed by its gentle beauty. As she bad lived, so she died. Having long given hciself to tbo rjvvi.Ws care, she laid down in death with t tie same cheerful resignation that slic had com¬ mitted herself to her nightly slumbers. Tears were uncalled for beside the grave of such an one. We felt rather like raising a shout of joy that the tired, though patient sufferer had entered upon the no ncca peace of of God Cni that ii passeth understanding. x,. THIS V. Believing every reader of the The Demo¬ crat to be deeply interested in the import¬ ant; measures now transpiring before the Ligidature, we leave out editorials, local it.eins, and communications that we may be able to publish the full text of the action of the House Committee, and impeachment articles presented against the Comptroller General.
