An Important Find in Egypt. A targe nuiuiter of inscriptions have 1 ''it lUscovered hi hiti* rto unopem Egyptian pyramids, which throw great right ujkju the little known early dyuas t.es of the I’i..raohs. and revotute-nize t,.t common idea* of the Osiric wo:ship. Heii- Bragsch, a younger brother of the famous Brugseh Pasha, the advocate of the theory that Israel’s pursuer* were drowned in the Mediterranean and not in the Red Sea, lias made a discovery hardly rious less important. The sale of va¬ relies of some Aral* led him to suspect that they had found some new treasures, and following up the clue he, came upon the catoliiliy hidden subter¬ guished ranean burying places of many distin¬ representatives of the Thebiau JRoyal ;ine. The place of sepulture was a gorge not far front aimient Thebes. He found the mummies of about thirty kings and members of the Royal (the family, including those of Aahmes Greek A mas is,', at the eighteenth dynasty, who reigned his about 1700 years btfore Christ; of successors, Arneuiiotop and Thot mes, first, secoud and third, reigning between B. C. 1066 and 1600; of Raine¬ ses, first and secoud, and Sati first, who came ltetweea them—these last Isiir.g representatives of tie nineteenth dy¬ nasty—and of several other potentates. Their sarcophagi had previously been undisturbed, and even the enormous ceremonial wigs of frizzled hair which they wore are safe and sound. The Royal the sleepers have all been transported to museum at Boulak. When their coffins shall be fully ex¬ amined, and moreover, when four very long papyri shall lie unrolled, knowledge very inter¬ esting additions to our of Egypt may he expected. In the reigns of some of these monarc'us occurred the Jewish captivity aud flight from Egypt, and it is quite possible that some i jx>r tnnt information may be given. E tch of the papyri j* not far from 300 fee:, in length, and from a foot to sixteen inches in width, the writing being very close. As most of the previously decipher- d historical documents relating to Egypt are quite fragmentary, there are great hope that the present discovery may fill many gups. Should 'this expectation not iie realized, it will still be very sat¬ isfactory to look upon the faces of a dozen or more men who were the proud¬ est sovereigns in the world before Greece had fought against Troy, and centuries before Romulus had built the first wa’l at Rome. Archaeological research lias already theories overthrown many fine spun of the learned, and it may be that our ideas regarding Egypt are to undergo Berious modifications.— Cincin¬ nati Ouzctte. Concerning the Moon. The moon, says Prof. Proctor, does not revolve around the earth, but the two circle about each other, and the real center of the revolution of each is the sun. If there were a railway suffi¬ ciently “ elevated ” to reach the moon, which 18 238,818 miles distant from us, we should be fifteen months making the journey at ordinary railroad speed. Upon arriving, we should observe sev¬ eral interesting phenomena. First, it is a very lesnectaUkj luminary of a diame¬ ter of 2,081 miles, with a surface of 14, 000,(XX) square miles, a volume one forty-mnth of that of the earth, and a mass Then, one-eighty-first the of it. being force of gravity one sixth of the earth, we could be thirty six feet high, and still quite as active as we are here. But our longer bodies would have a longer day in which to disport themselves, and one-half for there is a lapse of twenty nine of our days between the lunar sunrise and sunset. Our ex¬ tremities, however, Would certainly of suf¬ fer after sunset, for the surface the moon is 250 degrees below jero at mid¬ night, and the reaction ttuiarj noon would try even our prolonged propor¬ tions, for at noon the suiface would be 18 should degrees be above the lonely, boiling-point. probably, We very for there is no living creature there now. Still, as Prof. Proctor says that all planets pass through five stages, the last of which is death—a stage which the moon has reached—the apprehensive mind naturally inquires how soon the earth will probably reach it. The pro¬ fessor answers, reassuringly, that the earth is now about 500,000,000 years old, and. that it took the moon 80,000,000 to reach its present state. He therefore concludes that it will take the earth 500, 000,000 years more to reach the same condition. There is thus no immediate cause for apprehension. Frontier Criminals. The different kinds of criminals in New Mexico and Arizona are given dis¬ tinguishing names. “ Rustlers ” are thieves who steal cattle on the United States side of the line, run them into Mexico, sell them there, and then load themselves with Mexican plunder for the return trip. “Cowboys” are those who earn an honest living by herding, and behave well enough when at work, although when in the towns lor a holi day they commit all manner qf outrages for fun. “ Card jerkers ” are professional gamblers who cheat those with whom rfe •'Di.sl.r, " «, ...» rob bers. “Notchers ate men uho wantonly take human ]lie, apparently with the so h- object of gaitiing reputation as desperados. Silver ho ever, is an exception in this re*pe/ t among border towns, for it has a District Attorney who prosecutes vigorously and a .Sheriff who does net let his prisoners escape. The African slave trade continues to be in vigorous operation in Soudan. Gessi Pasha inflicted a crushing liberated defeat upon the slave traders, and immense numbers of slaves. If Col. Gordon had been prop¬ erly supported by Tewtik Pasha, there is reason to believe that the slave trade would have been driven out of the Sou¬ dan. Since his departure his old enemies have to a great extent regained their former influence, aud have succeeded in reviving on a large scale the traffic in negroes. It is quite true that the traffic can not lie effectually suppressed until domestic slavery is abolished in Egypt, but yet Col. Gordon’s experience shows that by the adoption of a vigorous policy the number of victims may lie greatly diminished, and the trade rendered both hazardous and unprofitable .—London A e.uiK _ Set Back 42 Years. ‘1 was troubled for m tny years with Kid ney C th, nupUiut, I Gravel &!•.;’my blood htw came «- •*■ d id and inactive; cothd harili >’ cr ‘ 1 about: was an old worn out m an 'M over; i ounl get nothing to help me, ««• J'SkS IT. ,1S 5ft , m ,l i am is active as man ’of 30 . although 1 am 72, and i have no donbt, it will do as weii for other.- of m\ It is worth a trial.”—(Father.)~ Sunday M reutv. •S i ill Cliili 'weather in Pern .—Bouton <i s teis Vv e a Jidivia. joke ?—KxcJi — Toronto GXohe.
