Aunt Sti>an's SnrecMions to a Fretful Wife. Hester: „ exclaimed Aunt Susan, | ceasing her rocking and knitting, and t sitting uapright. “ D,j you know what / your kuslamd will do when you are , ! dead?’ “What do you mean?’’ was the start- ! p v ..a ‘ tie tnil -,i marry t ne sweetest- tempered j girl he can find.;; ■ “ Oh, auntie !” Hester _ began. ished,” “Dcm’t_interrupt said Aunt Susan, me until leaning I’ve back tin- J : and not be taking as good up her a housekeeper knitting. “She may J \ an yon are; in tact i tl: ink not, but shew aft e good jiaiured, She may not even love him as j well a; you do, but she will be good-na- 1 ! “ A hy, auntie—’” llihtisn tali, continued Aunt Su- j sail. “Every day you live yon are rnak- j j ing your husband more and more in love with that good-natured woman, who may Mr. take and your Mrs. place some day. After j Harrison left yon the i other night, the only remark he made j about them was : ‘She is a sweet worn an. ” “Oil, amirie—” “ That isn’t all,” composedly contin ned Aunt Susan. “To-day your hus¬ band Mi us half way across the kitchen floor, bringing you the first ripe peach¬ es, and all you .lid was to look on and say : ‘There, Will, just see your tracks on iny clean floor! I wou’t have my floor all tracked up.’ Some men would have thrown the peaches out of the u-iu dow. To-day you screwed up your face when he kissed you, because his miLS taehe M kiss as damp, and said, ‘ I never want you anything to me again. ’ When he empties you tell him not to spill it; M-lien he lifts anything you tell him not to break it. From morning until night your sharp voice is heard complaining and fault-finding. And last ninter, when you Mere sick, you scolded him about his allowing the pump to freeze, and took no notice when he said. ‘ I was so anxious about ,£ >U that I did not think of the pump. “ But, auntie—” “ Hearken, child. The strongest and most intelligent of them all care more for a woman’s tenderness than for any¬ thing else in the world, and without tliis the cleverest and most perfect house¬ keeper is sure to lose her husband’s af¬ fection in time. There may be a few more men like Will—as gentle, as lov¬ ing, as chivalrous, as forgetful of self, and so satisfied with loving that their affections will die a long, struggling death ; but in most cases it takes but a few years of fretfulness and fault-finding to turn a husband’s love into irritated indifference.” “But, auntie—” “Yes, well ! yon are not dead yet, and that sweot-uatured woman has not been found: so you have time to be¬ come so serene and sweet that your hus¬ band can never imagine that there is a better-tempered woman in existence.” Does the World Miss Anyone. Not long. The l>est and most useful of us will soon be forgotten. Those who to day are filling a large place in the world’s regard will pass away from the remembrance of man in a few months, or, at farthest, has in a few years after the grave closed upon their remains. We are shedding tears above a new grief made that grave and loss wildly is irreparable, crying out in yet our in our a short time the tendrils of love have entwined around other supports, and wo no longer miss the one who has gone. So passes the world. But there are those to whom a loss is beyond repair. There are men from whose memories no woman’s smiles can chase recollections of the sweet face that lias given up all its beauty at death’s icy touch. There are beyond women the whose plighted and drives faith extends those grave, away as profane who would entice them from a worship of their buried lovers. Such loyalty, public however, is hidden away from the gaze. The world sweeps ou beside and around them and cares not to look in upon this unobtruding grief. It carves a line and rears a stone over the dead and hastens away to offer homage to the living. Gough. After all his life-long work upon the platform, and with the high fees his fame and abilities justly command, John B. Gough is not a rich man. His private charities are as large and numerous as they are unostentatious, for this great-hearted man does not let his left hand know wliat* his right hand does. He has met with frequent and heavy losses on account of the tender-hearted M-illingness with M’hieh he puts liis valuable autograph on the back of a friend’s album for ninety days, and the almost infallible certainty with which he is compelled to get it back again for himself when the three short months have floM-n. Mr. Gough ought to be worth $500,000, but like most men whose hearts are wrapped up in, and whose lives are consecrated, to some great work of ref rm, he is not a good busi¬ ness man, and impecunious friends and suffering humanity have got most of the money the great apostle of temperance has earned by hard platform work. Real Heroism. In one of our sleeping cars there WH9 an old bachelor who was annoyed by the continued crying of a child, and the ineffectual attempts of the father to quiet it. Pulling aside the curtain, and putt ng out his head he said : “ Where is the mother of that child? Why doesn’t she stop that nuisance ?” The fattier said very quietly : “The mother is iu the baggage car in her coffin; I am traveling home with the baby. This is the second night I have been with the child, and the little creature is wearying plain” for its mother. I am sorry if its tivc cries disturb any one in this car.” “Wait a minute,” said the old bach'elor. The old man got up aad, drcsseil l.im- If and compelled the father to lie down and sleep, while he took the baby himself. That old bachelor stilling the cry of tin baby all night was a hero. And the man who, fur the -ake of oth rs. "ives np a law ui gratification iu his own house, ot in the social ch' l , is as nr at a hero aa though he stood upon the bat¬ tle field.— Exchange. When others are suffering, drop a word of kindness and sympathy. If they are suffering from a Cold, give them Dr. Balls’ Cough Syr¬ up ; & few dobCs of this valuable remedy will afford instant relief, and a twenty-live cent bot¬ tle will cure the worst Cough. The Queen and the Poor Peasant. ; The accident of royal worthy notice and pat-, nuaee has often lifted persons i and families of humble birth iuto retiue- j ment and places of distinction. An a.1- : venture pointing to such a result the is re late.1 in this recent story of Queen of Italy. the It appears that, as site was driving to royal wood of Liealo the coachman mistook the road, and one ot the gentle- i men asked a countryman the way. The man, seeing the fine carriage and horses, and the servants’livery, thought and all the gay comi»anv, he was being fooled. “ As if yon did not know !” he said, with a big grin. The Queen laughed, and assured him that they were lost Then only did the countryman condescend to Point out the way, after which he walke 1 I off as if fearing to be laughed at again. “ Give him 20 francs foe his trouble,” said the Queen to one of her escort, w ho, ! going after the countryman, said to him: “ Here, my man, is a little present from the Queen o' Italy, who thanks you.” “ The Queen !’’ cried the countryman, ‘ returning to the carriage. “Forgive me that I did not know thee. But I had i never seen thee before. Thou art as | beautiful as a May rose, God bless thee.” And the carriage drove off. Now the countryman, who had once seen the Queen, wanted to see lier pretty face again, and the following day he j presented himself at the palace. | “ I know her, you know,” her he added, mysteriously. day, “ I spoke to her yester¬ and I want to speak tc again.” Thinking he had to do with a madman, the porter was about to have the poor fellow arrested, when the very gentleman who had given him the 20 francs ap¬ peared, and, recognizing the man, told him to wait. He informed the Queen of his presence. “Bring him here, by all means,” was her answer. the When the man was, for second time, before the Queen, he said : “ Yes, tis thou. I thought I hud seen a fairy. tliee Thou yesterday art just an that angel. 1 had I two did little not tell ones without a mother. Wilt thou bo their mother?” “ That I will," said the Queen. “ Then there’s the 20 trancs thou gavest me yesterday. And 1 thank thee, but I want no money.” he went away, crying and smiling like a child. The Queen has adopted institution the two little ones, and they are in an nn der her special pa tronage. To BEHOVE bolts that have been rusted in, without breaking them, the most effective remedy that we know of is the liU'ral application of petroleum. It rarely fails- to accomplish the work, Care must be taken that the petroleum shall reach the rusty parts, and some time must be allowed to give it a chance to penetrate beneath and soften the layer of rust, before the attempt to remove the bolt is made.
