A reporter, wishing to obtatn . the called W information the about Captain Sheffield ,T. In response to au inquiry about Shef field. Copt. We have aimed specially to avoid making it anything of a frolic, or attracting the crowd that usually go on excursions. We will have a big crowd but it will be a crowd of earnest and quiet business men looking ' for homes aud investment. “And whv should it be a big crowd? The United States Veterinary Surgeon a £ Fort Leavou'wortb, Dr. Holcomb, de tailed to investigate the cattle disen-ee in Woodson Countr disease reports that th« foot ancl mou th exists in a severe j or;n and M t {} )e dreaded anthrax, or tiiaok leg as at first supposed, which ia much more fatal, killing 80 per cent, jje did not expect to iiudfoot and mouth disease, but was prepared to find an thrax. The foot and mouth is a specific disease that take* its own time. Tha majority of the cattle examined showed the characteristics of this peculiar discovered dis ease. In the more recently cases very high temperature was found which belongs to this epidemic, about 104 deg. Farhenheit. One of the most positive proofs of the correctness of the diagnosis is the death of a calf several days after the mother was taken with the disease. The disease poisoned the milk and thus killed the oalf, which was only a few clays old. Tho characteristic ulcerations of tho alimentary canal and mouth were also found. When an aui mal is attaeked.it tieoomes feverish and stupid, and the climax of tlie disease is the rotting off of the hoofs, followed by death. In the instances in the present epidemic the disease is at present cou fined to North-eastern Woodson County, but as cattle have gone to other parte of the State from there since the epidemic broke out other localities are apt to be affected. While it may be a great loss to the owners of the stock, yet to de stroy the herds in which the disease has appeared would be the best, aud safest course to pursue. Those who have lost their feet will be of little use for beef, as they will not easily fatten. All herds in the neighborhood, whether affected or not, should be strictly quarantined, Cattle have been known to take the dis ease several Months after others have recovered, but by mixing the herds it has appeared again 111 as virulent a form as before. A microscopical examination of the milk shows traces of the poison Wlj lhr~ »««» .nio.l recovered. If any of the cattle now affected should recover it would b« a dangerous thing to turn them on the range in the summer. There can be no question 2 that the State owes it to itself . M Mullagatawny Soup; - A lesson in soups was given in Miss Parloa’s cooking school, New York, and "bite stock, mullagatawny, bouillon and consomme were prepared w<L before the class. White soup first made. To merek four pounds of veal, which had been sim in a gallon of water for four hours, was added half an onion, a pars »ip, a turnip and a stick of cinnamon, Tlie soup was then cooked one hour longer, and strained through a sieve when it was ready to of be mullagatawny, served. In the preparation a fowl wejghing three pounds, three pounds [ of can veal, two large onions, wo large slice8 r , { carrots, four stalks of celery, 4 three tablespooufuls of’curry-powder, of butter, four leS poonfu! ’and tablespooufuls of flour, salt used. pepper, and five quarts of water were A chicken fat, equal to two table ^1 ^^oiip-pot “°^Mch ierefut‘ft cocked ' wereVffiTto and twenty minutes with frequent stirring Then the veal was added, and the whole was cooked fifteen minutes longer; then the chicken an( j water were added. The soup was and set back where it would g j mm er slowly four hours. When the chicken was tender it was removed and ge j. ono s j dej while the soup cooked. After the soup was bolted tlie butter was melted in a frying-pan, and tli ( e dry flour stirred in till the whole was a rich brown, when the curry-powdsr was added antj it was removed from tbe stove. This mix ture was stirred into the soup and it was then cooked half an hour longer. Then ft was strained and returned to the soup kettle aud the chicken was cut in small pj{ g _ Seasoning of salt and pepper was added and the soup simmered thirty minutes longer. The Chinese custom of decapitating their enemies slain in war is explained by the statement that they believe that the appearance af a person in the spirit world without ahead is prirna facie evi¬ dence of having committed some crime, and punishment is awarded accordingly; Hence tbe horrible mutilation which took place on the evacuation of Shanghai by tiie Tuipings, when the imperial offi¬ cers gave orders for the decapitation of every rebel body.
