1 - TTS 1' 1 •5 i I S "1 ! & 2 JL_ I Volume 8. WASHINGTON GOSSIP, CorrespondenceTlemocratl Washington, D. C., May Now that the Republican State Con¬ ventions have all been held and the delegates to Chicago announced, the friends of the various candidates may be seen pencil in hand figuring away as to votes on the first ballot, second choice, &., each one trying to nomi¬ nate his favorite. The Blaine men figure largely on the delegates voting as the sentiment of the party was ex¬ pressed in convention, and on this ba¬ sis claim a clear majority on the first ballot- The Arthur men on the con trary, while admitting that he is in a woeful minority as far as instructed delegates go,’ or the action of conven¬ tions would indicate preferences, count largely on the treason of delegates to those who elected them, aud the Na tioual Republican, the Administration organ, is aech day filled with delight¬ ful praise of any and all delegates who show a disposition to prove false to the men who elected them. If the present theories of the Repub¬ lican are correct, treason to friends who elect, ingratitude to those who place you in positions of trust, and a surrender of all principle, contsitute the highest type of Republican manhood. In fact, it virtually glories in its own shameful advocacy of delegates betray¬ ing the trust reposed in them by their constituencies, Mr. Arthur as an hon orable man should beg to be excused from the praise of such a sheet. To the impartial observer, who is not interested either in Mr. Blaine or Mr. Arthur, it is apparent that neither an be nominated with any hope of an election, as the breach between their partisans is too broad to admit of any¬ thing like a union ou either before the November election. Democrats heie are apparently enjoying the fight in the Republic m’family and are only surpri; e I that even the cohesive power of public plunder could have kept these wings together, or that the large number of honest men in the Republican party had not ere this left it and allowed the plunderers to entirely destroy each other. ^ Judge Wylie-bi the Kellogg case, ruling it cut of court and directing the jury to return a verdict of not gu lty, about till the star-route cases are disposed of, unless Mr. Kerr should at the small fee of §100 per day keep on prewiring indictments that have 110 more bottom to tliem than those be has heretofore drawn. Now that these trials are over it does look as though Geo.Bliss,Kerr & Co., had been for three yearn engaged in persecuting men, who whether guil ty or not were beyond tiie reach of the law, simply and solely to diaw from the Treasury their unearned thousands. If the Republican idea of justice as detieloped in tiie whole conduct ot these cases is correct the old lady is not only blind, but she is deai to all appeals for honesty and a public plun¬ derer of the worst character. Mr. Dorshiemer, of New York, made a strong speech in the House yesterday in favor of the Morrison bill. He de¬ clared the measure to be not only good but the best which the times permitted, and controverted tiie proposition that the price of labor wrs enhanced by tiie protective tariff. Mr. Dorsheimer has as strong and clear a voice as any mem¬ ber in the House. He generally speaks without notes, and secures the closest attention of every member present. For the first time in many years the managers of tiie g. o. p. are in a bad fix as regard, finances. WhileCongress is. in session at least they will not draw on tiie clerks, and tiie consequence is tiiat Republican Headquarters is w if h out a doBa r u f -f: reasurv Is he Chicago, and v . e National and C egress. i nal Cornmit tees are trying to keep up appearances Oil contributions from individual mem bers. This goes hard with the boy , „„ s heretofore they looked to others to ish the means to supply the members and their friends uith necessary sustinewx. Yesterday’s j cote j State conventions closed up the Republican prelim .v „ am paign. The latest figuring by the friends of Mr. Blaine sum the matter ud as follows : Whole number of dele gates, 820; necessary to a choice, 411. For Blaine,359, Arthur,, Edmunds, 77 ; Logan, 53 ; Sherman,23 ; doubtful, 14 ; contested—6 in North Carolina and 24 in Virginia—30. President Arthur’s arithmetic man gives substantially the same table, except that he reverses the figures above set down , alter v. his „ ana n „A SraTaTof UeS^SmSS' toi namrtwBbo nominated. 0, it nomi. nated elected it dosen’t matter a great deal how the figures are set down. CRAWFORDVILLE, GA., FRIDAY. MAY 9th, 1884, The bill which has been pending be¬ fore the Senate for some time to relieve the members of the Fitz John Porter court-martial from their oaths of secre¬ cy was yesterday postponed indefinitely on the ground that Congress had no authority to disturb the sanctity of ob¬ ligations imposed by the articles of war. It is stated that Carl Schurz will be on band at the Republican Convention at Chicago. This was to be expected. Senator Ingalls’ “Dfitch tramp ” is pretty sure to be around when there is a chance to make a bargain or turn a trick. He probably imagines another Hayes will be nomi nated, and that he can again “ sell out the Dutch ” and make things all right for his "Interior. ” S. 11. THE TENTH DISTRICT. MAJOR GEORGE T. BARNES THE COMING MAN. Glascock Enterprise. •‘Patriot aud Statesman.” There is no man living in the Tenth Congressional District who lias a bright¬ er record as a lawyer, patriot, philan¬ thropist or statesman than lion. George T. Barnes. A better, wiser and more deserving man can not be sent to Con¬ gress from this District. We would not be ashamed of Major Barnes in the splendid capitol of our great country, but we would he proud of him. lie is also a man from whose wise and pru¬ dent efforts we might expect to derive good for ourselves. He, if sent, will go to Congress to’ transact business ; and we may rest assured that our every interest will be watched bv him with untiring vigilance—and every effort made by him to promote our interest. When others are divining into “Old Sam’s pockets for appropriations the Major will stick his hands in and get some out for us. Let the nominating convention meet but with one object in view—to nominate Hon. George T. Dames Barnes tor for OoiiQTPsd Congress. Warrenton Clipper. “Orgaiilzing Victory.” The The Tuditienl political eamoaivn campaign of oil the he Tenth lenui Congressional District; of Georgia was formally opened on the morning of the 17th inst., by the meeting of the Dem oir.-.le'EraeAh-.-. Major Barnes, however, seems equal to the task. He has whipped the race ahead of time, and no doubt he will be the next Con¬ gressman from the tenth without oppo¬ sition. The Choice ot the People. The correspondent of the Charleston News and Courier says : The Demo cratic Executive Committee of this, the new tenth Congressional district recently met in Augusta and fixed a date early in July for the meeting of the district convention. Hon. George rp I. mrnes the tne Georgia ueoigia member meineei of ui me tiie National Democratic Executive Com mittee. is the only candidate before the people for the nomination, and he will undoubtedly have a walk over. The district could not have a better repre tentative as Major Barnes is a man of ability and energy. The district has been thoroughly organized this early in the campaign, and information from all portions of it is to tiie effect that Major Barnes is the almost unanimous choice of the people. It is not proba ble that there will be any Republicans or Independent candidates in tiie field. The tenth isasolid Democratic district. *— (101.1) ON, BOl.
