THE REMAINS (»' MR.
Speaking of the removal of Mr.
phetts from Atlanta to “Liberty
the Cartersville Free Press says : ;
We are glad that this step is soon
tie taken, because, as we understand it,
it was Mr. Stephens’ most sincere
that he should be buried with his
titers find at the dear old home he loved
so well. “Liberty Hall” must, indeed,
look sad and gloomy since the death
the great commoner.” It is rjo
clieered by the associations of
genuitie and his, friends,’’ and where simple and
hospitality ever awaited those
he loved. We shall never forget our
first visit there, many years ago, in
company with our old and honored
friend, A. G. Miller, who died a feiV'
days ago in Talbot county at the ad
vanced age of 70. After the usual sa
lutations, and just as Mr. Stephens had
welcomed us and was going to break
fast, he said , “Gentlemen, this is Lib
erty Hall, where everybody does as he
pleases.”
We had a most pleasant visit which
the writer has repeated several times
since with great delight. There, we
were at home, indeed. It would’be sad
to us to visit there now, and it would
be sadder still to be there with the
knowledge that his remains were not
resting in the spot he bad selected in
life for his sepulture. Thera was no
more appropriate place for the tomb of
Washington than at Mt Vernon; there

b y Ueiieral Ltte to his son, as the

Arlington Heights, April 5,1852.—My
| dear son : I am just in the act of leaving
I | homef or New Mexico. My fine old regi
ment has been ordered to that distant re¬
gion, and I must hasten to see that they
.
are p ropPr iy taken care of. I have but lit
tie to add in re > ly to your letters of March
25, 27 and 28. Your letters breathed a true
spirit of frankness ;they have already giv¬
en .myself and your mother great pleasu re.
You must study to be frank with the world;
frankness is the child of honesty and cour
age. Say what you mean to do on every
occasion, and take it for granted you mean
to do right. If a friend asks a favor you
should grant it if it is reasonable -, if not
t ell him plainly why you cannot . you will
wrong him and yourself by equivocation
of any kind. Never do a wrong tiling to
make a friend or to keep one ; the man
who requires you to do so is dearly pur¬
chased at a sacrifice. Deal kindly but
firmly with all your classmates ; you will
find it the policy which wears best. Above
all, do not appear to others wnat you are
riotf. If you have any fault to find with
anyone, tel 1 him, not others, of what you
complain ; there is no more dangerous ex¬
periment than that of undertaking to.be
one tiling before a man’s face and another
behind his back. We should live, act and
say nothing to the injury of anyone. It is
not only best as a matter of principle, but
it is the path to peace and honor.
In regard to duty, let me, in conclusion
of this hasty letter, inform you that nearly
a hundred years ago there was a day of re¬
markable gloom and darkness—still know n
as the dark day—a day When the light of
the sun was slowly extinguished as if by
an eclipse. The legislature of Connecticut
was in session, and as the member, saw
the unexpected and unaccountable dark¬
ness coming on they shared in the general
awe and terror. It was supposed by many
' that the last day-the day of Judgment—
had come. Some one in the consternation
of the hour moved an adjournment. Then
