presented to the citizens of this county
for signatures to request the ordinary
to order an election, as provided under
the new local option law on prohioitiou
and it remains with the voters to say
whether or not this growing evd shall
cease to exist in o ir county. The time

when every man, worn m nr child, who
feels any interest in the moral - , social,
and pecuniary well-fare of the country
should exert all their power to suppress

Gen. Toombs’ Illness.
Washington, Ga.. Sept. 29.—There
is no change In GeueralTooinbs’ condi¬
tion in the past twenty-four hours
Worth mentioning, outside of the fact
that he is weaker to-day than yester -
doy. For the past four days lie has
imagined himsels in Richmond, Vir¬
ginia, whither lie lias been called to
argue some important point in law.

Mr. Biooks. who was t'*e sawyer at
Mr. J. h■ Anderson’s mill, seve miles
north of Washington, Ga., hail his arm
cut off hy the saw Tuesday.
The Sunday Fticoiix, of Augusta,
becoming financially embarrassed, has
made a i assignment, and gives not'ce
that the issue of the 27th will probably
be the last.
John M. Clark’s Sons, a well known
milling (inn, of Augusta, failed and
made an assignment last week. It is
claimed, however, that they are honor¬
able men, and wiil pay every debt in
full.
Thomas Graham, of Conyers, com¬
mittee suicide last week at l’arson s
mill near McRae, this State, where lie
was.empioyed as a mill hind. He was
a young man of good character, and
was quite popular, but was addicted to
drink.
Ned Burns, his wife and three chil¬
dren, all colored, were poisoned with
arsenic at Atlanta, Monday. The wife
mistook arsenic; lor yeast powder and
used it in miking biscuit. At last
accounts it was feared tlut the woman
would die.
James Usher, a night watchman of
the Central railroad in Atlanta, was
run over by a switch engine on Satur¬
day morning last, and killed. lie WHS
exhausted with nursing a sick child,
and it is supposed that lie was not en •
tirely awake when the accident occur¬
red.
At Columbus Sunday, a child 18
months old was taken to the oilice of
Dr. Bullard for treatment of what was
supposed to lie ulcerative citarrli of
the nose. A f', er a careful ex animation
the true cause was revealed and re -
moved, which oroved to he a shoe but¬
ton that had been placed in the nose
seven or eight months ago.
Eugene Beck, the man who shot and
killed his wife and lief sister, has been
tried in Rabun Superior Court, con
victed and sentenced to the penitentia¬
ry for life. Several distinguished phy¬
sicians testify that, in their opinion,
when this double murder was commit
led, Beck was insane, and on this tes¬
timony the jury recommended him to
mercy.
J. Luther Young, aged 52, of
Wnglitsville, this State, has added his
name to the long list of suicides. His
sweetheart, Miss Morrison, had broken
her engagement with him because lie
had fallen into bad habits and was
drinking. He called to see her in Co¬
lumbia last Thursday, and urge! her
to marry him, but she refused to do so.
He then walked into an adjoining room
and shot himself through the heart.
