FRIDAY, JUNE, 25, 188(5.
HON. A. 0. BACON.
A Powerful Speech by a Powerful
Man in Crawfordviite, on
Tuesday Last.
Maj. Bacon reached here Tuesday
morning on the fast train and was
met at, the dpot by a very large crowd ’
includining the Bacon club at this
place and a small number of the Sha¬
ron de D. When he appeared at the
car door, the Craw ford ville Cornet
Band honored him with some of their
superb music. Alter passing through
the throng, who worn cheeridg him in¬
cessantly, he was taken in a carriage
which was drawn by two magnificent
gray horses, and was driven to the
Rrawfordville Hotel. There he receiv¬
ed his friends for a short time, and at
10:30 o’clock he was conducted to the
court house where he was received
with a perfect ovation of music and
applause. The whole house was
alloat with waving hats, A number
of ladies had assembled near the speak¬
er’s stand who presented him with
beautiful bouquets of flowers as he
caino in.
Three largo waiters well arranged
•with choice flowers filled tho window
In rear of the stand, while two vases
of elegant flowers occupied each end of
the stand.
The Hon. A. O. Bacon was intro¬
duced by Capt. Ham. J. Flynfc, who
tn a few words, made a nice little
siieech in behalf <>f the speaker. Maj.
Bacon then arose nmidts cheers and
deliveied a grand and convincing
speech of two hours, setting forth the
real issues of the campaign and handl¬
ing with the skill of an expert and
trained statesman the public questions
of the day He laid hare Gen. Gor¬
don’s resignation with the hand of a
scientific dissector—cleanly and com
liletete, but not rudely or brutally. It
was certainly convincing—never re¬
volting. Maj. Bacon was freqmntly
applauded.
Hon. Patrick Walsh, of Augusta.
was called for a nd responded with
, . -,.»rni uui
with rare good tenqmr and good taste,
for about half an hour. He Baid lie
was not there to say aught against
General Gordon, but to protest against
the iu fltiences in this campaign which
tended to the consolidation of politi¬
cal power m tho hands of a tew men.
Thu drift of political matters in Geor¬
gia represented a centralizing force
as well as a corrupting tendency.
There was tho use of money and tho
pressure of official power in this party
campaign which were apparent in
many counties. If Mr. Stephens were
alive to day, the Great Commoner
would say that this kind of politics
was antagonistic to Jeffersonian Dem¬
ocracy. Mr. Walsh’s speech was a
stirring one, and made a decided sens¬
ation.
There were about 350 voters in the
house and wo think tho sound argu¬
ment of the speeches, full of clear
reasoning, was duly appreciated by the
audience.
Maj. Bacon left on the 1:20 train for
LnGraugc where lie spoke Wednesday.
It h* now generally coneeded tl at lie
will carry this county. We 'nave heard
of several who were on the fence be¬
fnro healing him speak, are now
hearty supporters of lion. A. O. Ba
can for Governor of Georgia.
Said a member of a recently drawn
Georgia be expected grand to indict jury: men “We for can carrying hardly J
concealed weapons, when the major
part of the jury themselves are ballast¬
ed to their seats during their delibera¬
tions by the weight of a pistol in their
hip pocket.”
An industrious, hard-working girl’s
worth a score of the i lie, lily-handed
suit. Ignorance of the peculiar duties
that pertain to womankind is not
creditable to a girl, even if some girls
do think so. The working girl is the
hope of country,
