A SUGGESTION TO OUR LEGIS¬ LATORS. Burnings which may be attributed to incendiaries seem to 1st not only fre¬ quent, but alarmingly on the increase. .................; It™, a —w '» of well for the. W« ... believe ... ,, It would. riic 1 he nenetentiary even for a long term of years, i» not greatly ,, dreaded . ,1 by i„ u,„ clvi.ss v/ho are ready to apply the torch nnon 1 anv slight provocation They regard ... It rather as a time when divest ed of all the responsibility of taking care of f)1 themselves, they can ,,,,, eat amt wear at Homebody Use’s expenses. For the dishonor they care nothing; for they know that with the only class with whose good opinion they crave, it will be no dishonor, Nay, they are fully | iirsiiadcd that a term in the clmingaug will increa°e their iinpoit mice. . ut if the deat i jiemilty were attached to the burning of a dwelling, a gin-house or a barn, we do not doubt that fewer of them would lie burned. The tendency of late years has been to mitigate instead of intensify punish¬ ment. Even our penelentiary, mere farce hh it is to most who are s mtonc ed to it, is denounced by some as too severe. These burnings however have reached a point that s >me rigid meas¬ ures are demanded. Several years ago our luw-makeri elevated the grade of hog-stealing and since that time hogs have been more safe. To make house burning—especially gin-house and barn-burning a higher crime, would, we believe, have a like good effect. ’Tis worth a trial. IturUlcii'N Arnlt a Hulve.
