THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT.
An Honor to the Father of Our
Great Nation.
We herewith give yon a yery correct
but small illustration of the grand
shaft that towers high in the skies, be¬
ing the reverence and marking the
fame of our great Gen. Geo. Washing¬
ton, the 1 rst President of the United
States. This cut was made for the
Democrat and this article is a de¬
scription of a part of what we saw in
the beautiful capital of our nation.
m .
THE MONUMENT.
This is a white marble obelisk, situ¬
ated on the Potomac river, near the
northwest terminus of Virginia ave
n ue. It is the spot where Gen. Wasb
ington indicated his choice for the
erection of the statue which the Conti
nental Congress had voted in honor of
his services.
In 1835 the Washington Monument
Association waaformed. Chief-justice
Marshall was its first pi esident. The
accepted design vyas the idea of Robert
Mills; a shaft rising from a rotunda to
the height of U00 feet—designed to be
the highest structure ever reared hy
man, excepting the Tower of Babel.
The corner-stone was laid July 4,
1848. Ex-President John Quincy
Adams was to have delivered the ad
dress, but, his death occurring a few
months previous, Robert C. WinthropJ
of Massachusetts. Speaker of the House
of Representatives, was selected to
perform the duty. The amount col¬
lected was $230,000.
The funds were exhausted and work
suspi»dDiiviiefa’:e^tjTg,Jate civl 1
minated; but Congress naa it
appropriations for the purpose, work
was recommenced, and the shaft com
pleted at a height of 555 feet on Dec.
6, 1884. The capstone is a coniform
keystone, its height from base to top
being 5 feet 2! inches. It is 4 feet 5f
inches high on the outer face, with a
7-in-shoulder to bind on each side, ex
tending 10| inches below. It is 3 feet
aud a fraction square at the bottom,
aud 5 inches in diamater at the lop
where the aluminium tip fits on. Its
weight is 3,3000 pounds.
Be Cheerful.
Farmer’s wives and daughters can
do much towards making the toilsome
life of a farmer a pleasanter and hap¬
pier one. When returning from the
field, the barn or the dreary winter’s
ride from the city, cold, hungry and
perhaps discouraged (as who is not at
times?), the cheerful greeting of smil¬
ing, neatly dressed woman, and more
than all, the blazing tire, and a well
laden supper table waiting only for
father, will do much to lighten any
burden, and to inspire him with re¬
newed activity for business and life.
No good housekeeper or duty-loving
wife, delays the preparation of meals
of the day till after or just before the
coming of the men from the field.
How tedious it must be for them to
obliged to wait for the food which
should have been previously * ' prepared
„ How unpleasant , to them to move fro , a

this, that you may get nearer to the

How can we better employ our tal¬
ents and time than in making our
homes happy? The duty devolves up¬
on every member of the household to
add attraction to home. If we have
but limited means we can contribute
something that will enhance its beauty
and pleasures. But above all let ua
illumine it with all the light that
cheerfulness and temper can shed.
The hearthstone is the source of the
streams of influence that flow through
the world either to bless and brighten
or to destroy and ruin. Home life
shapes the destiny of a child. Ills af¬
ter life will either bear traces of its
happy influence, or carry tho impres¬
sion of its unhappiness.

for publication by Hubbard Brothers.
As Howard’s father was one of the
three founders of Plymouth Church,
and his most intimate friend for more
tlmu forty years, with a social intor
eoijrse at no time interrupted, and as
Howard himself, hy relation of his pub¬
lic life, was brought into frequent
contact with Mr. Beecher since his
early boyhood, it is obvious that he
ought to have and probably has mate¬
rial at his hand which is accessible to
no other contemporaneous writer.
The book is said to lie well nnder way,
and will be ready for tlie market
early. Mr. Howard, by the way,
was the author of the comprehensive
and interesting obituary published in
the Now York Herald, tho day after
