It haa been argiij-fI,*witU morr; or loss warintJi, that oae’ti clispcwtion is tersely ativctod by the kaiii of weather which prevails ?***•« when one is Peru. While tills Ls is * u * ib *’ but ' few . anoth** weather ph-nopunan in which I l*liove; lam convinced that thought is influenced, in a. very conakkrabl* d& gree, by the v/ealV-r. My notice waa first drawn toward this by a lino iii one of Voltaire's lottois, in which ho said: “Jly work has been mocky to-day be causa the weather was mucky.” From this tints on X took clusu and careful ac co " nt ,jt my ™n<iition during various kinds of wcaUasr. * * * I would G-giii writing, fuU of the encouraging xni«'tus which the weather gave me, and glad that X was able to do something which would bo apart and separate from my nervous, dismal self; and tTten a Btor ‘ ,) sw ""l' ,lown W* »“■ a '? < * with oolorouH scratclu my per; would clothe doluroua thoughts in even more doloronn words. When the storm was ss&resBXt S »£ iug why. It i.-: very hard to write, mote which J,-, hijurkle and glitter with mirth wl „„ lu ,. rt ia h , avy anfl wmbct -just an it i- dilUeuitt "to--write dirgeu aSftSSSRS.'Sft writing of comedies uiul toul wcathei w the writing pxpfirinutat^ of tragedies. plaiinel Once, ne w I two novels U) bo worked on simultaneously. The one plot w ;ih shafK-ii during a stormy js-riisl, . and tho other during a brief season of sunshine and summer glory which immedinb ly followed. Whenever it was btonriy 1 worked njion the stonn pluimsil novel, and whenever the weath¬ er was bright I worked upon the other. In each instance 1 wholly surrendered myself to the uicods which the weather stirred up within me, and made no effort to shake off the good cheer of the one or the doqxmdcney with w hich the other encompassed me. Aa a result, tho novel upon which wan settled no shadow of tho storm taint was cheerful and good humored; but tho other was so hitter, mournful and vindictive that I novel jinntod it. In each of these caw s, of course, I allowed rnyficlf to be wholly moved and swayed by atmospheric, ton* dciicics; and though I lost the profits oi several weeks of iiU*rary labor, I learned mi invaluable lesson. I saw tliat by projierly fortifying myw lf, and by mak¬ ing the right kind of struggle, I could resint yielding to both the dangerous flavor ot soft sweetness which sunny skies induced and also, in the same way, to the spitefillness and melancholy which were tho legacy and gift of the storm spirit. That is, I succeeded in partially of overcoming tho influences and cfleets the weather and at all times hi keeping my fa-I f in a mental condition of passable evenness. The comp.Ieto and |>erfect disentangle¬ ment of one’s un lit:)] notion from mich phenomena is, to mo, an impossibility; and it in eonio dcgr<*o enables me to understand why 1 wrote eo much in “Lelie” which I have since ho often re gret^d. * * * Why should it l»e otherwise? We arc oo sensitively consti¬ tuted that wo must, of necessity, bo aflecteil by the alternations of storm and Himshine. Tho more exquisite the jH»r B4.nu.lity, tho Htmnger the influence; and. in the case of invalids, the cttect is more considerable than it is in persons (^f Bound health. Women feel ntorm elTetds more keenly than men, ami the young more keenly' than the old. The nerves are the storm’s moot resistless flluvcs, anti the phlegmatic orcape it altogether. * ^ « Many writers never once touch a pen during sUuany weather, and others can only write clearly mm forcibly with a fcluit king about tl“'ir windows. 1 \h-u and artist a ruifer most from storms; tlu* latter fur more than would seem Lk«'ly on mere casual thought. Many a picture has 1 eon sjHuled by having its last touches laid on when it was storm¬ ing. Coloring, whether verbid or pig¬ mental, takes much of its tono from sky and utmost here.
