Athens Foundry & Machine
Works.
One of the most popular and staunch
business enterprises in Northeast Gosrgia
is the famous Athens Foundry Sc, Machine
Works. As far back as the 50’s may be
mentioned as tbe time when the career
of prosperity which has marked its his¬
tory first commenced. The line business
skill of (Japt. R. N.caenson raised the
coDcwn from a non-payiri'.'investment to
to one of the most lucrative investments
in this 5»ection. And from that time on
steadil* increasing in value and useful
ness, these works have grown to their
present large proportiens, and now have a
reputation for good and reliable work nr
every section of Georgia and other Stttes.
The annuae meeting of the stock hold

sho zed continued prosperity and growth
in these times of sharp competition, the
exdibit was greatly to the credit of the
officers who hare conducted the business

Tiie Tax on Ragging.
Senator Berry has shown that the tax
on cotton Jbagg ng adds 8050,000 to
the cost of marketing the cotton crop,
and that the lax on cotton ties further
increases the burden to the. extent of
81,350,000. The cotton planter loses
this money as absolutely a* if it should
by burned up. The tax on the bagging
goes into the pockets of a Trust, and it
is peid by producers who contend
gainst the cheapest lab jr in the world,
and who are obliged to sell two-thirds
of their product in foreign
countries and to accept foreign market
prices for their whole product. But,
in spite of the fact that taxes on beg¬
ging and ties are not needed by the
Government—in spite of the recognized
law of economics that it is a mistake
to put a tax on exports—in defiance of
the public interest, and in defiance of
justice, Senator Berry,s facts have
l,ecu unheeded; the Repuplican Senate
stands fast by the trusts, end against
the country. The taxse on bulging
and ties are still to be collected.
The Columbus Enbuir«r says the
farmers of the South, who pay this tax,
will l.e slow to forget that Senator Jos.
E. Brown, of Georgia voted with the
Republicans, and he thus helped the
party—Augusta N“ws.
