We’ve never before heard as much talk of quitting the use of guano or commercial fertilizers as has been talked recently. Some of our most extensive dealers speak of not handling it at all this year, and others say they don’t want to handle it and advise the far mers not to buy it. The tide of opinion has turned against t j ie use of these costly goods and our farmers should gener¬ ally take this matter into con sideration and quit the use it if possible. The Alliancemen over the state are considering the mat ter . _ _i and It is tnougtlt ,,u* thatthpv mail -y will not use any. All the pa pers that come into our office are filled with threats of the farmer* in various parts of the State> |akl the wis( , „ 10 ve () f dropping off the curse that ^ ^ ourfarmcr br „ thcrs poor and the curse that rids our country ofthousands upon thousan ds of dollars every year. Just think of the nun dreds of tons used m this tv ry ami aivl you von can e.UI count buinu a bale of cotton for every ton ofgua no—see what an enormous sum is carried from Taliaferro county year after year, It is simply alarming to sum it up and look at the figure r In a few years, if that amount was distri buted among on r fa rmers 5 it would make our people wealthy. Who seems to make money out of this class goods? The farmers seem tret poorer. Does the guano factories tirsti Y Nr> ql/etcillg (hetr works every year. • ( And,” they will say, “we can sell all the goods we can make without an effort.” We are pained toknowthat our people will buy fertilizers when they can be made at home that is worth twice as much as the commercial. We hope our people will take this matter to heart and st . t . if it j s practicable to give up this curse that is holding the r noses to the grindstone. Quit it, brother farmers, and make 1 what i . VOll consume _ at „, home and this / will -it 1 be happy 1 a land of ours in a very years. Don’t make threats what you will do but come out on the right side and hold up your rights. Hon Jefferson Davis on a recent visit to Vicksburg large was serenaded by a number ,* titizciis^ whom i l lie cldi\* 11 * to ereil a touching speech, con culding as follows: ■‘Here, as 1 stand before you, my love for you is as firm as the hills behind you.
