Dan Til mage’s Sons, oi New York, in their circular of Saturday, says the late rains have gieatly Improved the growing rice crop of Louisiana, and it now promises to he the largest ever produced in that state. This is very different from previous estimates. A negro man living on the farm of Mr. J. F. .Mivers, in Dodge county, found a partridge with four little chickens, which son had h itched out. When found she was hovering them. Mr. Rivers now has the chickens in bis possession and will raise them. Now it seems that there are often such cases coming along that need the charity of the county and the best way we know of to make ready for such emergencies is to have the coun¬ ty Commissioners to confer with some of our contractors and see how cheap¬ ly tliry will contract to furnish cof fins for all such cases. In that way they can be had cheaply and the coun¬ ty will always know where they can get the coffins and at what price. This will save all trouble like was had here last week. Some permanent ar¬ rangements ought to he made to bury the poor of the county. It has to be done and the cheapest way is the best way. iN OFFtCt. A LIFE TIME, We have no light to make upon the matter of our present State House of¬ ficers, only holding their offices so long They are all good men, have filled their offices well or else the people would not let them keep in office a life time. Our people have not thought of this matter as they should have done. There was a notice in this paper that one of the present officers had held bis office thirty odd years and that he was now nearing the wintery end of fiis life. Is it right, in thii grand free country of ours, to give >‘»y «•»« » mortgage on an office that »ieshall bold all his life? Is not .'there plenty of men in the state who could ™ the various offices as well as they lia\e lieen filled? Will it make the old officers mad if wo do not put them in, mechanically, next time, as they have been put in before or will any body oppose thorn? We think it is not right and i* an injustice to other men who ought to have a slice of the State’s fat offices. As we stated above, there is not a single one of the present officers that we have any fight to make against and wo don’t mean to harm them but it does see n th at we ought to have a change some times. Every¬ body knows that changes some times are for the hotter, if the change does no good in tills case it will prevent tin appearance of monopoly in holding 'offices. Our people m e do wn on some kinds of monopolies, whv not down this. If it is not a monopoly in of fiees wo never saw one. The newspapers of the state general¬ ly express the people's desire on this matter ami wo would he proud to hear trom our brothers on this aubj&t..
