EXPRESSCHARGES. As another illustration of the un¬ just charges made by the express companies, we can sight our readers to the fact that they are discriminaing against the masses worse than the railroads arc. If a big firm in Savannah want to send a heavy package by express to any part of the state it goes at much less rate than you or 1 can get. If that kind of work is not a thing for: the Alliance legislature to take hold of, we don’t know where they expect to find a needed reform. They carry peiees of freight for 1 firms in our Georgia cities for about one fourth what they charged the genera! public. In our knowledge, they carried recently a piece of freight like that for a firm that does business in a Georgia town. The piece weighed in the neigh¬ borhood of four hundred pounds and they hauled it, unboxed, til miles for less than 12,00. If one of our Alli ance readers had to have shipped the same goods, over the same road it. would hrve cost you more than four times as much. Mu. Pratt, the philanthropist who lied recently, )» reported by Dr. Cuv ler to aid: “The gia-at humbug in the world is the idea that in one v can make a man happy. 1 Jl(‘V ■rhad any satisfaction with mine until I began to o gOO( 1 with it. GREAT TAXATION, llnvv can any man wonder at the great cries coming up from the masses of the people* all over this country when they know how much money is being used by our government and a large amount of which is spent for things that our county can do with¬ out. Hail the coining of the Alliance and Democrat reform movement. Let the cries of the people be heard. The following facts, which are ta¬ ken from the columns of the Wash¬ ington Post, show the condition of affairs in this republic. The Post says : “h or the next two years our gov¬ ernment will spend annually more than *500,01)0,000. “To pay one year’s expenses of the government it will take nearly the combined wheat and oat crop. “Our annual output of gold, silver, copper, iron, coal, petroleum and lead will not foot our tax bill for twelve months. “Nor can we do it with a year’s product of cotton, wool, rye, barley, wine, potatoes and tobacco. “The combined capitalization of tr national banks is $5!)!),000,000. (•tie year’s taxes will nearly swallow U]>. “Now, all thin is the Federal tax. We have also to pay city, county and State taxes. “We pretend to he a nation of plain people, with no ariNtocraey, no stand ing army and expensive frills, and yet our taxes are more onerous than those of Austria, Germany or Groat Hraitian.” “Is not this a startling exhibition of the tremendous load the masses have borne? Is there any cause for won¬ der that the agricultural and laboring classes, viewing the wrongs which have been done them, are upon the eve of a revolution and have been driven almost to desperation by a consciousness of the in justice which lias been done themV” 'The Koine Tribune, commenting upon the startling array of figures and facts ipioted front the l’ost, says'. “The people must have relief or there will lie trouble serious ami im¬ mediate trouble. There must be a return to the simpler and more eco¬ nomic administration of the govern¬ ment or there will be no government to be administered. “Here is work for the Democratic party which is laid upon it l»y the oppressed people of the country, uml that party dare not sliivk the respon¬ sibility or turn a deaf ear to the cry of distress. “'Phcre is restlessness and discon tent, and justly so. among the far mers of tin-country. Years of grind ing oppression have been their lot. Years of toil without just rernu Iteration have been their portion. 'J’liese are no idle words. They are words of truth and solternoss and the party of the people, the Democratic party, cannot afford to treat with neg loot or contempt or indifference the stern determination of the brave and patient men who make tip the great army of the Farmers' Alliance, to have justice met-d out to them by the Democratic party or outside of it." li i- said that the prohibitionist ot Athens will start a daily paper t» champion their ea-e.
