REPLIES TO ARTICLE
OF LAST WEEK.
We are in receipt of a let
ter from B. D. Brantley,
brotner of Col. W. G. Brant
ley. The letter is given in
lull below:
‘Tn your issue of the 14th,
you perhaps unintentionally
do my brother, Hon. W.
G. Brantley, an injustice in
the following reference to
his speech at the Brantley
County Fair at Hoboken
Wednesday:
‘‘ Wednesday, of this week,
Hon. W. G. Brantley, son of
Brantley County’s name
sake, visited the h air at Ho-|
boken, delivered a jaw- 1
breaking speech and declar-l
ed himself for Hoboken.”
In as much as my brother
did not either directly or in
directly refer to the county
seat controversy in his
speech at Hoboken, the
a cove reference to it is both
gratuitous and untrue.
What he did say was that
he hoped that Brantley
county, named in honor oi
his father's memory, would
always be right, but right or
wrong he would always be
for Brantley county. I am
sure the most partisan Na
hunta advocate, hearing and
understanding his speech,
could not have found a syl
lable in it to which to object
or to which he could not
have whole-hehrtily agreed.
In as much as my brother
is not likely again to be a
candidate for political office
in Georgia your reference
to his political prospects in
the Nahunta section needs
no attention other than to
say that your premise being
mistaken your conclusions
are necessarily wrong'.
I trust you will in an early
issue of your paper take
occasion to correct the erro
neous impression of my
brother’s speech which you
have unwittingly given to
the public. Such a course
on your part will be at once
a courtesy and an act of sim
ple justice.
Yours truly,
B. D. BRANTLEY
The letter will speak for
itself. The editor was not
present to hear Hon. W. G.
Brantley, and therefore it is
impossible for us to have
quoted him, but a few citi-
izens who were present
seemed to be under the im
passion that he said right
^^.vrong he would alway be
"'r Hoboken. It is possible
that they misunderstood
him for we are confident
that they would have never
mis-quoted him for any per
sonal matters, inasmuch as
tne people of Nahunta have
been strong followers of
Hon. Brantley.
We are glad however, if
we did him an injustice to
correct same. Yet if the ar
ticle was untrue, it was due
to misunderstanding.

FEAR GHOST OF BIG WOODS
Reported Appearance of “Stick Sl*
wash" Causes Indians to Abandon
Hunting Grounds Precipitately.
The “Stick Siwash” has returned to
haunt the trapping grounds north of
Fort St. James. Terror stalks the wil
derness trails and panic grips the In
dians. If a brave hears the crackle
of a twig in the woods he looks about
him in fear that this ghost of the big
woods is dogging his steps. A num
ber of Indians, it is said, have been
frightened off their trap lines.
Fort St. James is one of the oldest
posts in British Columbia owned by
the Hudson’s Bay company. It was
founded in 1806 by Simon Fraser, the
pioneer explorer for whom the Fraser
river was named. Several hundred
Indians live about the fort and market
their furs there.
“Me ketchum fox in trap,” said
Musk-a-no-wab, who has abandoned his
trap line on Manson creek. "Me hear
little noise. Look up. See Stick Si
wash. He heap big Indian. Got war
paint on. He look mean. He say
nothing. Wave tomahawk like he say,
‘You get out.’ Me heap scared. Shake
like leaf. Me run back to camp. Tell
squaw and papoose. Pack up and
get out heap quick, by golly, you bet.
Stick Siwash bad medicine.”
Other Indians have brought back
the same story from the Manson creek
region. The “Stick Siwash” has long
figured in the traditions of British
Columbia tribes. The name means
ghost of the big woods. “Stick” is
slang for forest and “Siwash” is a
corruption of the French word “Sau
vage,” and is applied to all the Indians
of the Pacific coast. The superstitious
natives believe the appearance of the
apparition presages misfortune to the
tribes.
MADE STUDY OF FISHES
Eminent Naturalists Who Gave Good
Service to Humanity, and to
the Finny Tribes.
It is reported that when Dr. Frank
Buckland, the great naturalist, was
in his last sickness, he said to an anx
ious friend that he could not believe
Almighty God would be very hard up
on one who loved His fishes and oth
er living things as much as he did.
Another friend of the fishes, Sir
Charles Edward Fryer, knight, died
not long ago at Watford, near Lon
don, England.
His whole life since he began active
work was devoted to the promotion of
knowledge of fish and fishes, in rela
tion to the sendee of mankind. There
was no higher authority. He was
awarded endless medals and honors
by expositions and societies for his
monographs and annual and other re
ports.
He was one of the first to define the
international regulation of fisheries of
the high seas, and was a leading mem
ber of many fish congresses and com
missions.
He was the final authority, with the
last deciding word to say on all mat
ters relating to fish and the fishing
industries.
