WHITE HOUSE
WRITES THANKS
TO MRS. WALLIS
Tribute to Ike
In Christian Index
Sent to President
When MrS. G. C. Wallis heard a
tribute to President Eisenhower
which appeared in Christian Index,
Baptist publication reproduced by
Dr. Julian Pipkin, Central Baptist
pastor, over the radio she asked
for a copy and sent it to the White
House .
Mrs. Wallis, a former Waycrossan,
received a prompt letter in reply
from the White House thanking her
for the copy of the Presideritial tri
bute.
The original article was called “In
God We Trust’’ and follows:
IN GOD WE TRUST
‘ “We are delighted, Mi’. President,
you have sounded the religious note
several times during these early
days in the White House. Now sir,
we are rejoicing in the fact that you
have identified yourself with a
church.
All of us were happy when you
and your associates, on the morn
ing of your inauguration, went into
God’s house for a service of dedi
cation.
We were pleased, too, at your se
lection of II Chronicle 7:l4'for one
of the two passages opened for your
taking the oath: “If my people,
which are called by my name, shall
humble themselves, and pray, and
seek my face, and turn from their
wicked ways; then will I hear from
heaven, and will forgive their sins,
and will heal their land.”
Then, millions of us bowed our
heads with you as you led before
your inaugural address in prayer
that “all may work for the good of
our beloved country and Thy glory.”
We hear that your cabinet meet
ings are being opened with prayer.
We hope it will always be so.
Now, sir, you have joined the
Presbyterian Church. We who ad
mire you had found consolation in
the statement that you were a Pro
testant, that you had faith in Him.
But, there was a secret regret that
you had not made profession and
joined a church. You have done that,
and we rejoice.
You see, Mr. President, you are
more than our President. We in this
nation don’t want kings, or the like,
and yet we want the occupants of
the White House to be exemplary
in all things.
Your “Crusade in Europe” made
you a national hero. Then, that
smile of yours made you “Ike” with
a place of your own in our hearts,
and the hearts of free people every
where. We came to admire you as
a man of unusual talents. Party lines
tumbled as we elected you to lead
a “Crusade in America.”
But, sir, neither you nor any
other man can do it alone. Neither
can the finest talent among m£b,
commanded by you, right all that
is wrong in this nation and in this
world.
God and you can do it. Continue
to lead us. as you say, in “the work
that awaits us all, to be done with
bravery, with charity — and with
prayer to Almighty God.”
Keep your trust in God, Mr. Presi
dent. Continue to seek His guidance.
Call others to humble themselves
and seek His way.
Do that, Mr. President, and “the
future shall belong to the free.”
Do that and all the hordes of hell
cannot prevail against us.
God bless you, Mr. President, as
you lead lead us all to say, “In God
We Trust.”
