Three Million Will
Be Spent by
Ga. Power & Light
A three .million dollar con
struction budget has been ap
proved by the board of directors
of the Georgia Power and Light
Company at their recent meeting
in Valdosta.
According to E. C. Rees, vice
president and director, the com
pany will spend approximately
one million dollars for enlarging
and improving its distribution
system and $1,125,000 for trans
mission lines to serve this fast
growing area.
Among the projects scheduled
for Waycross are: a 66,000 volt
transmission line from Waycross
to Folkston; a 66,000 volt line
from Cogdell to Pearson; addi
tions to the Jesup substation; and
additions to the Kettle Creek
substations near Waycross.
“We are determined to keep
ahead of the record growth of
this area”, said Rees, who pointed
out that the company had shown
an increase of 118 percent in the
number of customers and an
increase of 297 percent in sales
of electricity during the past ten
years. Rees stated that this area
is continuing to grow and em
phasized that the Rayonier plant
construction at Jesup is only one
of a number of such projects re
cently moving into the Georgia
Power and Light Company ter
ritory.
A new power source for the
company will be available during
the summer when the first 31,000
kilowatt unit of the Suwannee
River plant at Ellaville will be
completed. Rees stated that the
capacity of this plant will be
doubled within a year and that
much of this new plant capacity
will be available for the power
needs of farms, homes, stores and
industries in the Waycross area.
The directors also approved the
sale of two million dollars of
bonds to partially pay for the
1953 construction program.
