American Cancer
Society Funds
Aid Studies
Scientists whose work is fi
nanced by the public through
contributions to the American
Cancer Society are at work in
large and small hospitals and
universities throughout the coun
try trying to find not only what
causes cancer but exactly how it
is caused.
Some four hundred chemicals
start processes in certain labora
tory animals that often lead to
cancer. So do x-rays and ultra
violet rays when they are played
too long on sensitive tissues.
Some viruses thave been shown
to cause cancer in susceptible
animals.
Scientists are observing, thru
fantastically sensitive intruments
what cancer-causing rays and
chemicals do to tissues, organs
and cells of the body.
There still is considerable de
bate as to whether cancer is
caused by agents from outside the
body — such as viruses and che
micals like those found in soot
and gasoline fumes — or wheth
er the malignant process could be
started by chemicals normally in
the body.
Only by this research, will the
key be found that may unlock
the door to the secrets of life—
and death by cancer.
Meanwhile, early cancer usual
ly is curable by surgery, x-ray or
radium. Learn the seven cancer
danger signals. Go straight to
your own doctor if one appears.

Obscured Vision
Big Factor in
Auto Accidents
CHICAGO — Obscured vision
was a factor in one out of every
eight of the fatal automobile ac
cidents last year, according to the
National Safety Council.
“Accident Facts”, the Council’s
statistical yearbook, shows that
nearly half of the visual obstruc
tions were rain, snow or sleet on
the windshield. A fourth of the
obstructions were trees, buildings
and other things along the high
way or adjacent to it. The re
maining fourth resulted from
parked and moving cars.
If you have something to. sell,
a 50 cents advertisement in The
Brantley Enterprise will be read by
people all over the county.
