LEAF SUPPORT PRICE FOR 1953
TO AVERAGE 47.9 CENTS POUND
The U. S. Department of Agriculture announced
Monday in Washington that it will support grower prices
of the 1953 flue-cured tobacco crop at an average of 47.9
cents a pound.
Last year’s crop was supported
at an average of 50.6 cents.
Both crops were supported at
60 per cent of parity as of July
1 of the years in which they

BLACKSHEAR MARKET RANKS HIGH
IN AVERAGE PRICE RAID GROWERS
10,068,982 Pounds Sold in ’52
For Record Average of $54.21
Tobacco prices on the Blackshear market topped all
previous records during the 1952 season, with producers
sales amounting to 10,068,982 pounds at an average price
of $54.21 per hundred.
Blackshear has consistently
ranked- with the top markets in
the Georgia-Florida Belt in
prices paid and 1952 was no ex
ception. The local market last
year had the second highest aver
age price for the season of all
the 22 auction markets in the
Belt
Total value of the 1952 crop
was $5,458,570, according to U.
S. Department of Agriculture fig
ures.
The 1951 crop amounted to
11,181,362 pounds, selling for
$5,092,247 — or an average of
$45.54.
Blackshear’s average price
for 1952 was $5.15 per hundred
higher than the total average
price paid for the 19 markets in
Georgia.
The Blackshear market oper
ated with six warehouses and
two sets of buyers last year,
one additional warehouse having
ported by means of loans. The
loan rates will range from 73
cents a pound for top grades,
down to 14 cents for lowest
grades.
As of June 1, about 497 million
pounds of tobacco of all types
with a value of about 219 million
dollars, were stored under price
support loans. Os this, about 215
million pounds were of the flue
cured type.
