Cotton Survey
Being Conducted
All farmers of Pierce County
have been mailed a cotton survey
card recently requesting informa
tion in regards to cotton, accord
ing to T. M. Minchew, office
manager for the Pierce County
PMA Committee.
Mr. Minchw said that this cot
ton survey card was necessary if
cotton allotments are to be estab
lished for the 1954 crop year. It
is likely that cotton allotments,
if they are in force in 1954, will
set up on cotton history for each
farm, from available information
obtained for the years 1950 thru
1953.
Farmers reporting on the sur
vey card that they have cotton
planted will be visited by a rep
resentative of the P.M.A Office
to obtain accurate measurements
of the planted acreage and other
information relating to cotton.
Several field reporters are
needed for this work, Mr. Min
ehew said, and anyone desiring
to do this work should apply at
the P.M.A. Office in the Post
Office Building in Blackshear at
once.
lightning a menace
The National Safety Council
reports nearly 400 deaths and
1,000 injuries from lightning each
year. Lightning also accounts for
about five percent of the nation’s
fires, or a property loss of
120,000,000 annually. The Coun
cil said rural areas suffer 90 per
cent of the damage done by light
ning each year.

$2,000 FOR CENTER
The Georgia 4-H Club Founda
tion has received $2,000 from De-
Kalb county to be used oti the
State 4-H Center. Harold Darden,
assistant county agent, said an
information letter on Rock fagle
was sent to the larger, privately
owned businesses with a request
for a contribution. Members of
the County 4-H Advisory Com
mittee made follow-up calls on
the letters, and the $2,000 result

BAD WEEVIL YEAR
The USDA cotton insect survey
showed an increase in boll wee
vils in the state again last week,
according to Dr. C. R. Jordan,
entomologist for the University
of Georgia Agricultural Exten
sion Service. He said 181 fields
were inspected. Eighty-five per
cent of them were infested with
weevils, as compared to 78 per
cent the previous week. It’s the
worst weevil year since 'SO.
