Hurricane Carol
Whirls Toward
Leeward Islands
Hurricane “Carol” spun with 90-
mile winds tonight toward the is
lands of Antigua and Barbuda in
the Leeward Island chain about
2,000 miles southeast of the Florida
mainland.
Hurricane warnings flew over
those two islands and others west
of them were ordered to stand by
on the alert. The center was about
400 miles east of Guadeloupe, where
storm warnings were displayed.
The Weather Bureau at San Juan
P. R., reported that “Carol”, third
tropical storm of the summer, was
moving toward the west-northwest
at 15 miles on hour.
It was expected to continue this
movement during the night with
slow increase in intensity.
The storm is named “Carol” for
third letter of the alphabet. The
first storm of the season, “Alice”,
generated south of Cuba in June
and swept across the Gluf coast
without reaching full hurricane
force. Storm No. 2, “Barbara,” de
veloped 325 miles off the Florida
coast August 12 and swept North
Carolina and Virginia areas with
winds approaching 100 miles an
lour.
