FORMER MISSIONARY RECALLS
43 YEARS SPENT IN CHINA
By Audrey R. Guest
At 26, Miss Mary Culler White,
who is this week guest speaker
at the revival in progress at the
First Methodist Church, left
America as a missionary to China.
Miss White is now 78.
Though the years have brushed
her hair with grey, her spirit is
not dampened. She speaks with
a softness towards China, wheie
she spent 43 years, and her main
interest in life is furthering the
kingdom of Christ. She recalled
what the Chinese say when they
accept Christianity: “The devil is
on the run.”
Miss White, in an interview,
retraced the years from 1901,
when she landed in that faraway
land. The common people could
not read. Superstition was uni
versal. During the first few years
in China as a missionary, Miss
White was put in charge of a
sewing school. “And I always
disliked sewing,” she said laugh
ing.
Travel was mostly made by
boat up canals. There were no
railroads, no cars, no wagons.
Learning the difficult Chinese
language also presented a prob
lem. Miss White traveled with a
team of Christian Chinese wo
men, some of whom she helped
convert. She praised the work of
the mission schools in helping the
Chinese common people learn to
read. In the Bible schools pupils
from 8 to 8G were taught.
“When they learned to read,
they loved the Bible,” Miss White

said. It was in the Shanghi area
that Miss White first worked as
a missionary.
During her stay in China, Miss
White returned to the United
States on furloughs. She said that
before the Japs bombed Pearl
Harbor, the missionaries feared
that wap with the U. S. was in
evitable.
In November, 1941, ten days
before Pearl Harbor, Miss White
and about three of her co-work
ers moved again into Shanghi.
Then 15 months later came im
prisonment. They were housed
behind barbed wire in a bombed
out university. There were 1,050
other peoples, American, Bel
gians, British.
Miss White, who has a good
sense of humor says: “We were
well treated. They thought wo
men didn’t have sense enough to
do any harm.”
“Here in America in the past
10 years I have heard with in
creasing sorrow how the Com
munists take advantage of the
Chinese people and are forcing
communism on them”, she says.
“The condition now of the
Chinese people is horrible to the
extreme. They have no religious
or political freedom. I am sure
that in the end the Communists
will find it impossible to stamp
out Christianity and the love of
freedom existing in those old
fashioned Chinese and even more
fully in the hearts of those who
have found true liberty and are
believers of Jesus Christ.”

POSTAGE STAMP COMMEMORATES
FUTURE FARMERS ANNIVERSARY
A three-cent FFA postage stamp will be issued this
fall in commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the
Future Farmers of America.
The commemorative stamp will be first placed on
sale at Kansas City, Missouri, on October 13 during the
first full day of the annual National FFA Convention.
Postmaster General Arthur E.
Summerfield has announced that
110 million of the FFA stamps
will be printed. The design of
the stamp depicts a typical farm
scene with rolling hills in the
background. Featured in the cen
ter foreground is a Future Far
mer, standing beneath a tree,
viewing the scene before him.
Wording on the flowing ribbon
across the bottom of the stamp
calls attention to the 25th Anni
versary of the FFA. The color
of the stamp will be blue.
Local chapters of the FFA are
expected to work with their lo
cal postmasters to assure a plen
tiful supply of the commemora
tive stamp in all communities
where FFA is active. Many chap
ters are planning special pro
grams and other observances to
call the public’s attention to the
stamp. Most of these programs
are scheduled for October 14,
since that is the first day that
the stamp will be available in
post offices outside Kansas City.
The local chapter is participat
ing in this drive.
Clothing specialists say a soak
ing in a strong solution will help
remove perspiration stains on
clothing. Launder as usual after
soaking.
