NEGRO KILLED,

MEN INJURED
Ezekiel Shinger, 42-year-old Ne
gor of Patterson, died at 1:50 a. m.
Sunday after an accident Saturday
night on Highway 84 near Bruns
wick.
Glynn county police said Shinger
was sitting in a parked car with
no lights, on the highway, and Cole
man Griffin, 19, of Nahunta, was
driving west and crashed into the
parked automobile. Before he died
Shinger told the officers he had
□een drinking and parked the car
oecause he was not able to drive.
Griffin suffered a crushed chest
and a possible punctured lung in
the accident, and a passenger in his
car, James Walker of the U. S.
Navy, received a fractured right
leg and severe cuts and bruises.
Griffin was quoted by the officers
as saying he was driving in a
heavy fog and did not see the park
ed automobile. The impact knocked
Shinger 50 feet down the highway,
and the auto traveled 83 feet and
turned over twice before stopping.

BEEF CONSUMPTION
AT RECORD LEVELS
IN UNITED STATES
Per capita consumption of beef
in this country has reached re
cord levels.
A beef promotion campaign,
started last August, is now show
ing definite effects, according to
C. E. Bell, University of Georgia
Extension Service livestock spe
cialist. Americans are now eating
an average of 75 pounds of beef
per year for every man, woman,
and child, Bell said. This is the
highest figure ever reached for
beef alone, and it represents an
increase of one-fourth over last
year’s per capita consumption.
The beef promotion campaign
is part of a five-point program
designed to help drough-stricken
cattlemen and stabilize cattle
markets, Bell said. In addition to
sales promotion, the program in
cludes direct Government beef
purchases, emergency feed dis
trnbution, special livestock cre
dit, and reduced freight ratea on
feed, hay, and livestock moved
from drought areas.
LIVESTOCK HELPS
PECAN INCREASE
The Georgia livestock indus
try’s advance has been an im-
portant factor in the. .increased
pecan yield in tfie state, horti
culturists say. They point cut
that grazing the pecan orchad
prevents a heavy* - growth of*
■weeds or non-edible legumes
which, incorporated into the soil,
take up much needed moisture*
that should be available for pe* - *
can production.
