According to a survey by the
American Institute of Public O
pinion about 45 per cent of our
adult population indulges in some
form of gambling. Yet uk A
mencan people- were bUppc^dY
greatly shocked at the reports ol
the Kefauver Committee.
Now most people will admit
that organized gambling or big
gambling is wrong. It is agreed
that it breeds crime and buys on
the police and political officials.
Yet many of these same people
will sanction small-scale gamb
ling especially if it includes some
worthy institute trying to raise
money for a good cause. If our
best institutions and organiza
tions do not keep the law we can
not expect others to do so.
Gambling is gambling whether
it is on a small scale or large:
The dime that a boy plays on a
bingo game or cake walk hoping
to win a prize is just as big
gambling to him as the man who
puts $lO on the horses. Small
scale gambling and games of
chance are the sources. We
need to strike gambling at its
roots.
It is very difficult to explain
to boys and girls in a Sunday
morning Sunday School class the
evils of “playing the horses”, “one
arm bandits” and the “numbers
racket” when they join in games
of chance in a neighborhood com
munity project sponsored by their
parents. >

gambling.

have largely failed is that they
have not .made sufficiently clear
the immorality of gambling, or
ganized or unorganized. Gamb

ling is wrong because it is dis
honest, because it exploits hu
man weakness, because it under

good faith which underlies all
social relations, it makes success

what Ray Springle meant when .
he said gambling is “an easy
form of theft.” Gambling then is
stealing and is a violation of the
commandment, ‘Thou shall not
steal.” The original meaning of
the word ‘gambler’ was a fradu
lent gamester. The gambler is a
fraud. He sets out to take some
thing that is not his. The Seigels
and the Costellos make no pre
tense at an honest bargain. The
gambler is a fraud first, last and
always. Jesus had a good bit to
say about honesty, sincerity, and
integrity.”

Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Bentley
of Hoboken announce the birth of
a daughter on Dec. 7, in a Way
cross hospital. The little girl has
been given the name Michelle Rose,
and will be called Michelle. Mrs.
