BLACKSHEAR TEAM MAKES
GREAT RECORD IN MACON
Blackshear’s fighting Tigers, who started the 1953-
54 basketball season regarded as an “off year” team, last
week wound it up by heaping glory on themselves and
their school as they advanced to the finals of the class B
state tournament at Macon, i
The lads coached by Wallace
“Country” Childs overcame Ogle
thorpe County High, Bradwell
Institute of Hinesville and Cass
High of Cassville, three of the
toughest contenders in the state,
before bowing Saturday night to
the powerful Fort Valley quin
tet, 62-49.
Oglethorpe Undefeated
From the opening whistle
Wednesday night, the BHS team
showed its mettle. Facing un
defeated Oglethorpe, the Tigers
poured in the points to a final
score of 85 to 61 in a game that
was tied six times. Donald Bo
wen hit for 25 points, George
Brantley for 19, while Benny
James and Calvin Bennett add
ed to their laurels with 17 and
12.
Oglethorpe’s tall Henry Caba
niss, who had averaged 39 %
points per game during the regu
lar season, was held to 29.
Tall Boys
Thursday afternoon, Black
shear advanced to meet Hines
ville, another rangy crew. The
tall Fillingame boys, six-feet
eight and six feet-six, got 20 and
10 points respectively, but Brant
ley with 19, Bowen with 16,
James with 13 and Jackie Dixon
with 11, made it a 65-56 score
in favor of the Tigers. Black
shear trailed 34-30 at halftime.
Cassville’s tall timber, paced
by J. B. Bearden with 31 points.
WHEN YOU NEED
ING
Brantley Enterprise
gave Blackshear one of the most
exciting games of the tourna
ment, but the locals wound up
with a 72-69 victory. Bowen’s
30 points, along with 14 for
Brantley, 10 each for Bennett
and Dixon, 6 for James, and two
for Thomas Gill, did the trick.
1952 State Champs
Fort Valley, 1952 state champ
ions, who had lost only one game
in three years, led Blackshear
from the start Saturday night.
Running up a 19-7 lead during
the first quarter, the middle
Georgians coached by Norman
Faircloth, held their lead and
made it a 62-49 victory. Fort
Valley’s great high school star,
Ed Beck, was held to 11 points,
but Eddie Merritt got 25 and
Dclmer Fennell 15 to give Fair
cloth’s charges their second state
B championship in three years.
Strong Defense
Donald Bowen rang up 18
points and Benny James 17 in
the Fort Valley game, but the
Tigers could not overcome the
terrific Fort Valley defense,
showing fatigue after four
straights days of hard play.
Large numbers of Blackshear
fans made the trips to Macon.
Saturday night the Macon city
auditorium, which normally has
a capacity of 2100, was packed
with 3800 basketball enthusiasts.
