Larry Murray, 8,
Drowns in Farm
Pond Wednesday
Larry James Murray, eight
year-old son of Mr. and Mrs.
Pete Murray of Route One,
Blackshear, drowned to death
early Wednesday morning, in a
farm pond on the Bertie Proctor
farm, at about 8:15 Wednesday
morning, June 9.
The Proctor farm is just off
Highway 121, about five miles
south of Blackshear.
Larry’s mother, and others,
were working in a field adjacent
to the Bertie Proctor farm and
was sent by his mother on an
errand to the neighboring house
on the Proctor farm, along with
the small seven year old sister
of Mrs. Murray. On the way they
stopped by the farm water-hole
and.the little boy began wading
in it
Although the water hole looks
shallow it is approximately 15
feet deep in places. The little
boy stepped off into the deep
water and went under, while the
little girl stood helplessly by.
She then notified the boys mo
ther who summed help.

Agents Raid 321
Stills in March
Reports on illicit still sei-
zures just released by state and
federal officials indicate that,
while moonshiners might be
getting a little bolder, the reve
nue agents are operating more
efficiently against the flood of
moonshine in Georgia.
Figures released by Georgia’s
Alcohol Unit showed that state
and federal agents seized or des
troyed 321 illicit stills in the state
during the month of March a
lone. This brought the total for
state and federal officers, ex
clusive of stills captured by city
cr county officers, to 1,020 for
the first three months of tne
year, as compared to 967 for
the same period of 1953.
Along with the wrecked stills,
state and federal agents des
troyed 542,105 gallons of mash
and 17,258 gallons of moonshine
often poisonous.
AU. S. Treasury Department
release showed that of 1,181 il
licit stills seized by federal a
gents throughout the nation dur
ing the month of March, 1,000
were in the Southeastern Re
gion, which includes Georgia,
Florida, Alabama, Mississippi,
North Carolina, South Carolina
and Tennessee. Still seizures in
the Southeast, amounted to 84
percent of the nation’s total in
March, continued to gain in 1954,
in spite of the reduction in the
number of federal agents assign
ed to the region.
If moonshiners aren’t getting
any bolder in their operation,
then at least their stills are gett
ing bigger. Records showed that
the combined capacity of stills
raided in Georgia by state and
federal agents during the first
quarter of 1954 made a gain of
20,797 gallons as compared with
still seizures in the same period
of 1953.
Both B. I. Gilbert, Director of
Georgia’s Alcohol Control Unit,
and W. K. Johnston, Supervi
so-in-Charge of Alcohol and To
bacco Tax in Georgia, voiced
praise for the untiring efforts
of their agents and urged the
fullest cooperation of public of
ficials and the public in stamp
ing out moonshine.
