Atlanta Slated
To Be Television
Control Center
New equipment being added to
the telephone building in Atlanta
will make that city one of the,
three Television Control Centers
in the nation according to P. W.
Shearouse, Manager at Waycross.
Mr. Shearouse said that the
Long Lines Department of the
A.T.&T. Company, which will
operate the center, has announced
that it will be ready for service
in October. The local or local
television stations are connected
with this center as they now con
nect with the network in Atlanta.
Four networks, NBC, ABC,
CBS, and Sumont, pass thhoUgh
Atlanta and serve television sta
tions in nine Southern States.
The center in Atlanta will moni
tor these networks to check trans
mission quality and direct trouble
clearing for about 40 television
stations in the South. About 12
television channels now go into
and out of Atlanta.
The other two Television Cont
rol Centers function from New
York and Chicago. Washington,
D. C., at present monitors all
networks for the Southern states.
When the center is established in
Atlanta, Washington will be
come a sub-control center and
clear trouble on side branches
of the vast Bell System Network
facilities. Other sub-control cen
ters in the South will be located
at Charlotte, N. C., and Jackson
ville, Fla.
The equipment in Atlanta will
include three monitoring bays
for black and white and one for
color. The bays include a screen
much like that on a home TV set,
which technicians watch for
clarity, brightness, flicker, etc.,
and speaker, which is checked
for synchronization with the pic
ture volume, and clarity.
The sub-control center in Jack
sonville has been operating since
the middle of April and super
vises monitoring and trouble
clearing for all of Florida. The
Charlotte center will go into ser
vice in the fall. This center will
operate in the territory south to
Jacksonville and west to Atlanta

‘Slow Down and
Live* Is Slogan
For Safe Driving
Maybe you just don’t believe
in signs, but the more quickly
you see the one reading “Danger
Ahead” the more likely you are
to save your life while driving
on the highway. Your keenness
of vision and your speed are
mighty important factors in
determining the distance at
which you first spot this hazard.
Backing up the current “Slow
Down and Live” safety cam
paign sponsored by Southern
Governors, a spokesman for the
Georgia Optometric Association
reminded motorists this week
that it takes time to see and
then it takes time to act.
“If you are the average
driver it will take you a little
over four-tenths of a second to
move your foot from the ac
celerator to the brake pedal af
ter you have seen a ‘Danger
Ahead’ sign,” the GOA spokes
man said.
“Especially it is important to
slow down at night, as two
thirds of all traffic deaths oc
cur then even though only one
third of the driving is done at
that time.”
On a dark highway, clear vi
sion is limited to the effective
length of your car’s headlight
beam, which is less than 30 feet.
That is why h'ormal visual acui
ty is necessary to enable you to
read signs in time to stop, he
said.
POLITICAL

FOR REPRESENTATIVE
To the Citizens of Brantley County:
At the request of a number of
friends I have decided to enter the

ty, subject to the state Democratic
primary to be held September 8.
I was born and reared in Brantley
County and I feel that I am well
acquainted with the problems of
our county and state. If elected as
your representative in the state
legislature, it would be my con
stant purpose to serve yoU as honest
ly and conscientinously as I possi
bly can.
If you think I am the man besr
qualified to serve you, I will greatly
appreciate your vote and influence
in the race.
Yours sincerely,
W. B. (Bill) HARRIS.
FOR REPRESENTATIVE
I wish to take this means to an
nounce to the voters of Brantley
County that I am a candidate to
become your next Representative to
the General Assembly, subject to
the Democratic primary to be held
Sept. 8, 1954.
I am a life long resident of our
county, and I feel that I am well
acquainted with our problems.
During the past years, I have been,
in an unofficial capacity, frequently
in contact with various agencies of
our State government, particularly
in connection with our roads. I am
sure that the experience which I
have gained, arid the contacts that
I have .made, will be a great help
to me in securing the improvements
that we want and need in this
county.
Needless to say, I am unalterably
opposed to toll roads in Georgia.
I pledge myself to cooperate with
whatever State administration may
be elected. My term of office shall
be devoted to working for progress
in our county, our section, and our
State.
Your vote and your influence in
my behalf is earnestly requested.
Very sincerely yours,
T. L. “Roy” Dowling

FOR THE STATE SENATE
To the Voters of
Brantley County:
This is to announce my candidacy
for State Senator from the Third
senatorial district in the forthcom
ing Democratic Primary to be held
September 8, 1954.
The office that I am seeking is
the same office that I held the last
time that it was Brantley County’s
time to furnish the Senator for the
district.
Having served over four years
in the last war with a great part of
the time spent overseas and also
belonging to several veteran’s or
ganizations, I feel that I am es
pecially adapted to helping serve
the needs of the veterans, their
families and dependants.
In view of a recent Supreme
Court decision, our State govern
ment and the next Governor will
need members of the legislature
with a legal background to assist
in remedying the bad situation that
now confronts us. I assure the vo
ters that I will fight for our rights
in this and all other times when
our rights are jeopardized.
In the event that the people of
my home County of Brantley again
favor me with this high honor, I
will serve impartially the interest
of all the people of the district as
j have done previously.
Your _ vote and influence will be
greatly, appreciated.
Sincerely-yours,
