In answer to your letter of August 2} requesting Information
on the service, pay and travel expense of Lee S. Purdom of
Blackshear, Georgia, as an employee of the State Department
of Agriculture, it is a pleasure to furnish you the informa
tion as contained in the official records as follows.
Purdom was employed March 1, 1955 as an inspector
in the Bureau of Markets and a tabulation of the service com

PAYROLL AT $250 PER MONTH
Lee S. Purdom of Blackshear, who is running for
the State Senate, is still on the state payroll at a salary
of $250.00 per month and has drawn $4,375.00 since he
went on the payroll March 1, 1953, it was learned this
week.
Mr. Purdom is being carried on the state payroll
as an inspector in the Bureau of Markets of the State
Department of Agriculture.

Information on Purdom’s pre
sent state salary was contained
in a letter from State Auditor
B. E. Thrasher replying to an in
quiry from State Representative
O. W. Raulerson, who is al§o h
candidate for the State Sehate
post. /
Thrasher revealed that Pur
dom drew SI,OOO as four months
salary in the fiscal year ending
June 30, 1953; $3,000 for the 12
months ending June 30, 1954; and
$375 for 1% months since July
1. Mr. Purdom drew no travel
expense. Thrasher reported him
still on the payroll as of August
24, 1954. ' ;
The amount of money Purdom
has drawn from the state has
become an issue in the present
Senate race. An advertisement in
behalf of Mr. Raulerson’^ can
didacy previously revealed that
Mr. Purdom drew $42,215.9$ from
the state from 1937 through
1949 as a State Guard officer
and in two terms in the State
Senate.
Hortense PTA Met
Wednesday, Aug. 25
The Hortense P.T.A. met for the
first meeting of the new school
year on Wednesday, August 25 With
a good attendance. New members
are mothers entering children for
the first year. ,
New teachers in the P.T.A. are
Mrs. Lottie Staudenmira from S.C.,
Miss Ida Vause from Florida and
Mr. R. D. Thomas of Nahunta. Note
was made of the high attendance
of the school last year making them
eligible for another teacher, which
they are hoping to have.
Mrs. Katie Griffin led the pro
gram giving the outline of the pro
gram for the year. Mr. R. D. Thomas
led the devotional.
The P.T.A. will meet once each
month, on second Wednesday in the
month.

tary; Mrs. Mitch Rowell, treasurer
