$330 ON CHARGE
OF BRIBERY
12 Months Sentence
Is Suspended
The case against H. F. “Pat”
Frost, accused of accepting a bribe
from a liquor runner, was reduced
to a misdemeanor by the trial jury
in its verdict rendered in Brantley
County Superior Court Wednesday
night, Sept. 22.
Sentence was passed on Frost
Thursday morning by Judge Walter
Thomas. Frost was fined $330 and
given a suspended sentence of 12
months.
The prosecution, represented by
J. R. Walker Jr., claimed that Frost
accepted a bribe of SSO from Harry
Buckins of Waycross, who confess
ed to having 10 gallons of moon
shine liquor in his possession.
Mr. Frost indicated he would pay
the $330 fine. Judge Thomas gave
him 60 days in which to raise the
money. Frost was defended by W
A.. Wood and Cecil Roddenberry
The defendant claimed he was only
trying to collect SSO bond from
Buckins for drunk driving. Buckins
was given 12 months suspended
sentence.
A jury found Ernest “Baby Ray”
Harper guilty of driving under the
Influence of alcohol and Mr. Harper
was given a sentence of six months.
He appealed for a new trial. His
attorney was Lamar Gibson.

er at the Parent-Teacher Work
shop to be held in Blackshear at
the Main Street Grammar School,
Saturday, September 25.
Registration will begin at 9:30
A.M., with the meeting beginning
at 10:00 A.M. Mrs. Robert G. Har
ley, district director, will be in
charge of the workshop. Dele
gates from all PTA organizations
in Brantley, Pierce and Ware
counties are expected to attend.
Lunch will be served at the
noon hour for a nominal sum and
reservations for lunch can be
made by calling Mrs. George D.
Brantley, president of the Main
Street PTA. All persons interest
ed in furthering the school pro
gram are urged to attend the
meeting.
NAMES OF 31 PIERCE WOMEN
ON LIST FOR JURY SERVICE
The names of 31 Pierce county women have been
placed in the petit jury box and may.now be called for
jury service, LaCount D. Walker, Clerk of Superior Court,
reported this week. ———
Jury commissioners of the
county on August 30 completed
revision of the jury lists. The
names of the 31 women were
placed in the box following pass
age of a recent Georgia law mak
ing it permissable, but not man
datory, for women to serve on
juries.
There are now 566 names in
the petit jury box of which 31
are women. There are no women
on the grand jury list, which in
cludes 226 names.

Rev. and Mrs. Carl E. Milton of
Nahunta, Georgia announce the en
gagement of their daughter, Salty
Anne, to Mr. Andrew S. Edwards,
son of Mrs. Evelyn P. Edwards of
Nashville, Georgia and Mr. Troy Ed
wards of Eatonton, Georgia.
The wedding will take place
November 25, at 5:00 P.M. in the
First Baptist Church at Pearson, Ga.
Miss Milton attended Bessie Tift
College where she received her
A.B. degree in English. She has been
employed by the Cook County
Board of Education for the past
year.
Mr. Edwards received his degree
from Mercer University. He served
two years with United States Army
and for the past year has been em
ployed by the Berrien County Board
of Education.
Hortense PT A Met
Wednesday Sept. 15
The Hortense Parent Teacher Ass
ociation met in the school lunch
room on Wednesday afternon, Sept.
15, with thirty members present,
with Mrs. Ruby Strickland presi
ding. Mrs. Eugene Dubberly led the
devotional.
In business session the P.T.A.
voted to provide playground equip
ment for the school grounds. Com
mittee appointed to beautify the
campus were; Mrs. Hub Raulerson,
Mrs. Winton Adams, Mrs. Perryl Ro
zier, Mrs. Roy Harper, Mrs. Lawton
Middleton and Mrs. Mike Hender
son.
The teachers were in charge of the
program in a panel discussion on
“Growth and development of child
ren”.
The officers for the year are;

The hostesses serving refresh
ments were Mrs. Ted Strickland
and Mrs. Hub Raulerson.
The committee appointed by the
grand jury to inspect the Hortense
School were; Oscar Strickland, Ru
fus Shuman and Clovis Johnson.
They visited the school on Tuesday,
September 21 and were entertained
by school officials with lunch in
the lunch room at the noon hour.
They were accompanied by super
intendent of county schools, Her
schel Herrin.
Bill Broome Made
President Commerce
Chamber Executives
Bill Broome of Albany was elect
ed president of the Georgia Cham
ber of Commerce Executives Asso
ciation at its annual convention at
Rome, Ga.
Named to serve with him were
Eben Reid of Columbue, first vice
president, Joe Chance of Dalton,
second vice-president and Moffett
Kendrick of Valdosta, secretary and
treasurer.
James Scarborough, manager of
the Rome Floyd Chamber of Com
merce was elected regional member
of the board of directors.
The association concluded a two
day meeting in Rome Saturday
night.
Bill Broome is a nephew of Carl
Broome, Enterprise editor.

BRIDE AND GROOM — Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Orser who
were married at Belle Glade, Fla., Sunday, Sept. 12. The
bride is the former Miss Helen Jones, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Howell E. Jones of Belle Glade. The groom is a son
of Mrs. Mamie Orser of Nahunta.
Baptist Women Met
At Church Sept. 16
The B.W.C. had their regular
meeting at Nahunta Baptist Church
on Thurs. night Sept. 16, which was
also a special occasion, the B.W.C.
being organized one year. The sub
ject for the evening was “A Suffi
cient Saviour for Leaders of Youth”.

hankerchiefs as a going away gift
from the members of the B.W.C.
In honor of this one Year Anni
versary the W.M.S. served birthday
cake and punch.
One Os Her Brightest Lights
Hoboken PTA Met
Monday Sept. 21
Two hundred members were pre
sent for the first fall meeting of the
Hoboken Parent Teacher Associa
tion held at the school cafeteria on
Monday night, September 21.
The new president, Mrs. Ernest
Thrift conducted the meeting. The
new yearbooks were distributed.
Rev. Ernest Abercrombie gave
devotional followed with prayer.
Mrs. J. R. Driggers, secretary, read
the minutes and correspondence.
The teachers and officers were in
troduced by Mr. Cleve Jones. There
are six new teachers.
Miss Bardee, music, teacher, con
ducted a group of boys and girls of
the 7th grade in singing four songs.
Mrs. Ellis gave an interesting talk
on ‘ The new way of reading”. Mr.
Jones, principal, gave a brief talk,
expressiong appreciation in having
the new school building. Miss Bar
dee sang several solos and was ac
companied at the piano by Miss Iris
Barr of Nahunta.
The elected officers for the year
are; Mrs. Thrift, president; Mrs.
J. I. Miles Sr., vice-president; Mrs
J. R. Diggers, secretary and Mrs.
Elery Kelly treasurer.
The hostesses for the evening
were; Mrs. C. F. Dukes, Mrs. Agnes
Braman, Mrs. H. H. Colvin, Mrs. R.
T. Lee, Mrs. McSpadden, Miss Lou
Ann Levis and Mrs. I. J. Woodard.
The twelfth grade won the grade
count, Mrs. Cleve Jones and Mr.
Dudley Spell, teachers.

James Orser at
Belle Glade, Fla.
BELLE GLADE, Fla.,—Tall bas
kets of gladiolas, palms and candle
bra formed the background for the
marriage of Miss Helen E. Jones,
daughter of M. and Mrs. Howell
E. Jones to James Derrick Orser,
son of Mrs. Mamie K. Orser of Na
hunta, Georgia.
The Rev. Allan R. Watson, pastor
of the Northwood Baptist Church of
West Palm Beach, Fla., performed
the double ring ceremony at 4 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 12, at the First Bap
tist Church in Belle Glade, Fla.
Mrs. U. W. Malcolm, organist,
played a program of nuptial music,
and Mrs. B. A. Roemer, soloist, sang
“Because” and “At Dawning’,,
The bride, given in marriage by
her father, wore a ballerina length
embroidered Nylon tulle over ice
blue satin made with a V-neckline,
fitted bodice and bouffont embroi
dered tulle skirt and matching
gauntlets. The head piece was of
Matching blue velveting and she
carried an arm bouquet of white
carnations with an orchid center.
Mrs. H. B. McCall, only sister of
the bride was the matron of honor,
and only attendant. She wore melon
crystallette over taffeta made with
a V-neckline, deep bertha collar,
snug bodice and a full pleated
skirt. Her head piece was of match
ing horsehair bow and she carried
melon colored carnations.
Best man was Ransford Orser,
brother of the groom, of Blackshear,
Ga., and ushers were H. B. McCall,
brother-in-law of the bride, and
Franklin Jones.
The bride’s mother wore a pale
pink printed organza, made with
half folds over the shoulder, fitted
bodice and flared skirt, pink acces
sories and wore a corsage of pink
carnations. The groom’s mother
wore a brown and beige printed silk
voile, matching accessories, and a
corsage of pink carnations.
Immediately after the ceremony
a reception was held at the home
of the bride’s parents. Mrs. Charles
Norton, cousin of the bride, Mrs.
Ransford Orser, sister-in-law of the
groom and Miss Jerrie Harper, niece
of the groom assisted in serving the
punch and bride’s cake which was
decorated white shades of pale pink
wedding bells, and a small bride
and groom.
Mrs. Orser is a graduate of the
Belle Glade High School and Stet
son University where she was a
member of Zeta Tau Alpha Soro
rity. Before her marriage she was
employed in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Mr. Orser graduated from the
Belle Glade High School and was in
the Maritime Service from 1943-46
and is now in business in Nahunta,
Ga.
For her traveling outfit the bride
chose a blue-gray nylon and cotton
suit, orange hat with veil and mat
ching accessories. After a wedding
trip to Talladega, Ala., the couple
will be at home in Nahunta, Ga.

SCHOOL ENTERS
NEW BUILDING
Nahunta High School
To Enter New
Building Oct. 11
Hoboken High School began us
ing its new $160,000 building Mon
day, Sept. 20, according to county
superintendent Herschel Herrin.
Hoboken also has a new $30,000
gymnasium.
The new $240,000 high school
building at Nahunta will be ready
for use Monday, Oct. 11, Prof. Her
rin stated. The new $40,000 gym
nasium will be completed soon.
Hortense school has a new $12,000
lunchroom.
The new school building at Ho
boken, Nahunta and Hortense are
modern in every respect and will
provide adequate facilities for the
schools for many years to come.
They were among the first to be
built under the State School Build
ing Authority.
