OKEFENOKEE AJh I
country i w n, fi MLBH ||
One of Georgia’s leading Cypress producers, Charlton
County includes much of the Okefenokee Swamp. Camp
Cornelia, about twelve miles southwest of Folkston,
county seat, was the headquarters of the ill-fated 1889
project to drain the swamp and convert it to farmland.
After forcing a drainage canal thirteen miles into the
swamp, the sponsors were forced to abandon the pro
ject, and the swamp has remained undomesticated to
this day. In 1937 the area was designated a National
Wildlife Refuge.
In scenic Charlton County and throughout Georgia,
the U. S. Brewers Foundation works constantly to
assure the sale of beer and ale under pleasant, orderly
conditions. 'Believing that strict law enforcement serves
the best interest of the people of Georgia, the Founda
tion stresses close cooperation with the Armed Forces,
law enforcement and governing officials in its continuing
"self-regulation” program.

"SUPER RAIN," NEW SOUTH GEORGIA
CO. OFFERS IRRIGATION SERVICE
From Blackshear comes the art |
nouncement of a new company ie
voted to the irrigation needs of
South Georgia farmers. This com i
pany. Super Rain, is a division of
Truett Hardware Co., of Black
shear, and is organized to serve
those farmers desiring to irrigate
or to secure a wrvey of irrigation
needs, equipment necessary, and
costs.
Super Rain is headed by Charles
Truett, a 1951 graduate of Georgia
Tech. As a graduate engineer, Mr.
Truett is in a position to conduct ।
a responsible survey for those de
siring it.
“The 1954 drought, worst in his
tory in this section, brought home
to many of us the need for irri
gation,” said Mr. Truett, "but
most do not know, specifically, i
what the exact requirements are,
or what the dollars- and- cents
costs would be. That is the pur-j
pose of our organization — to pro
vide a reliable, responsible survey
of irrigation needs, and an exact
estimate of the cost of filling
them.” »
“We think this service is es
pecially needed.” Mr. Truett con
tinued, "because most farmers
Some Old-Age
Benefits May
Be Refigured
Several hundred retired work
ers in this area who are draw
ing federal old-age insurance
benefits may now have their bene
fit amount refigured by disre
garding periods of disability be
fore they reach 65, Mr. O. L.
Pope, Manager of the Waycross
Social Security Office announced
today. •
When the amount of the social
security benefit was originally
figured, the period of disability
before reaching 65 had to be used.
This resulted in lower benefits
than would have been the case
to work until he became 65. If
if the individual had been able
this retired wage earner now
establishes a period of disability
before reaching 65, his case can
be completely reopened and a
larger benefit amount paid.
The requirements that one must
meet in order to qualify for this
.“disability freeze” are as follows:
1. A person must be totally dis
abled for any work.
2. The disability must have ex
isted for at least 6 months and is
expected to be long continued.
3. The disabled person must
have worked in covered employ
ment for 5 out of 10 years be
fore the disability began and for
one and one-half out of the 3
years just before he became dis
abled.
4. He must have been under
65 at the time the disability be
gan.
A person must meet all of these
requirements in order for the
provisions of the “disability free
ze” to apply.
If you were disabled before
you reached age 65, and you are
still unable to work, you are in
vited to contact your nearest So
cial Security District Office and
discuss your case.

or installed system can prove tc
be a very costly matter indeed.’'
Mr. Truet‘ stressed that irriga
tion is a highly profitable invest
ment, even in years of normal
rainfall. “Irrigation provides not
only insurance against drought,’
he continued,” but it is a guaran
tee of greater crop yield during
any year. And new low costs and
methods have combined to bring
it within the reach of even the
small farmer.”
“Os course our business includes
the selling and installing of irri
gation equipment,” he said. “We
do feel, however, that our irriga
tion survey, offered without cost
or obligation, can do much to
help the farmers in this section
learn something of what irrigation
entails, and what it car do for
them.”
i Truett Hardware Company, of
which Super Rain is the new divi
sion, is familiar to farmers of this
section. Under Mr. J. B. Truett,
this company has been serving
i them since 1925. It is felt that this
new service will prove to be ano
ther step in the progress of agri-
। culture in South Georgia.
