Dixie Growth
Reflected in
Truck Tonnage
Dixie’s dynamic economy shows
no signs of slackening the pace
of its industrial revolution.
Truck tonnages —a sensitive,
reliable economic barometer —
showed a 10 per cent gain for
the first quarter of 1955 as com
pared with the comparable period
a year ago, the Georgia Motor
Trucking Association, Inc., an
nounced today.
The boost in truck tonnage, re
flecting the general improvement
in business, continued the up
swing recorded during the fourth
quarter of last year.
Based on analysis of reports
of 222 Class I and contract car
riers in the South, the first quar
ter tonnage was 6,976,483, com
pared with 6,343,421 for the same
period of 1954.
Motor vehicle carriers and
building materials haulers regist
ered top percentage increases.
However, the two classes account
for only about 8 per cent of total
tonnage.
More meaningful was a sub
stantial increase in general
freight.
Single decrease registered was
an approximate 6 per cent drop
for carriers of agricultural com
modities, who haul 1 percent of
total tonnage.

Fires Endanger
Valuable Soil,
Cravey States
ATLANTA—Taking cognizance
of the surprising fact that over
one third of this country’s 900,000
yearly fires are grass and brush
fires. Safety Fire Commissioner
Zack D. Cravey has pointed out
that they not only destroy valu
able humus on top of the ground
but easily can get out of control
and spread to nearby buildings.
“Os course most of the brush
and grass fires are due to care
lessness as are nine out of every
ten fires”, the Commissioner said.
He suggested such fires could
be prevented by taking the fol
lowing precautions:
1. Cut back all tall grass and
brush near your home.
2. Never toss a lighted match
or cigarette from a car window.
In woods be sure all matches,
smoking materials and campfires
are dead out before you leave
them.
