plays Russian Roulette. Maybe
nothing will happen for a few
spins, but eventually the result
can be fatal.
The real danger of high speeds
does not necessarily lie in in
creased frequency of accidents
but rather in increased severity.
As Hathaway G. Kemper, presi
dent of Lumbermens Mutual Cas
ualty Company and a leader in
highway safety, pointed out, the
faster a motorist drives the great
er are his chances of being killed
if he has an accident. To illus
trate his point, Kemper cited the
following figures showing how
the death rate in accidents in
creases with speed:
Vehicle Speed Fatalities Per
1,000 Accidents
40 47.9
45 53.0
50 80.0
55 92.4
60 136.2
65 153.2
70 and up 246.9
Some people may argue that,
in this jet-propelled atomic age,
drivers are entitled to go faster
to get where they are going soon
er. Actually, driving at a higher
speed doesn’t make too much dif
ference in the amount of time
spent on a trip.
In a test in Kansas, two cars
were sent on a 295-mile trip over
the same route. One car was driv
en at a top speed of 65, and it
made the trip in 6 hours and 25
minutes. The other car was driv
en at a top speed of 50, and it
made the trip in 6 hours and 50
minutes. Although the faster driv
er save 6 per cent in time, he
lost 11 per cent in gasoline con
sumption, 50 per cent in oil con
sumption — and he almost dou
bled the possibility of his having
a fatal accident in addition to
endangering the lives of others.
You owe it to yourself and
your family to drive carefully.
After all, the true test of driv
ing skill is not the ability to drive
a car as fast as it will go but is
the ability to get yourself and
your passengers to your destina
tion safely.

Nuclear Weapons
Compared to
‘Damocles Sword’
Major General George J. Hearn,
State Director of Civil Defense,
has warned Georgians that “for
better or worse, whether we like
it or not, for the rest of our lives
we live with the modern version
of the sword of Damocles — the
atomic bomb and the hydrogen
bomb — suspended over our
heads.”
“We must accustom ourselves
to a new way of life,” he con
tinued, “where our survival de
pends not merely upon our mili
tary preparedness, but upon the
readiness of every able-bodied
citizen to participate wholeheart
edly in the defense of his life,
the life of his family, the life of
his community, and the life of
his country, no matter what the
sacrifice in time, convenience or
effort.”
General Hearn concluded that
a strong civil defense is a weap
on for peace. It is more than a
means of survival. It is a vital
part of our national defense pro
gram whose first purpose is to
prevent war. If the enemy knows
that he cannot demoralize us by
an attack on the home front; if
he knows that we are prepared
for it; if he knows that our civil
defense is manned, well-trained
and equipped, he may never
launch such an attack.
Improper passing can cost
your life.

see that fine fat mountain yonder?
You can iron it out, flat as a flounder
.. . and easy as whistling!
Just point one of Chevrolet’s special
hill-flatteners at it (either the 162-h.p.
“Turbo-Fire V 8” or the 180-h.p. “Super

Barr-r-r-r-o-o-O-O-OOM! Mister, you
got you a flat mountain!
... At least it feels flat. For here are
engines that sing as sweetly as a dynamo
. . . built to pour out a torrent of pure,
vibrationless power. Big-bore VB’s with
the shortest stroke in the industry.
So most of the time they loaf. Even at
the speed limit they just dream along,
purring out a fraction of their strength.
An engineer can understand why they
are so hyper-efficient. But you don’t have
to be an engineer to know that these are
the sweetest running VB’s you ever
piloted. Just come in and try one out!
